Essex County, Massachusetts — First responders were overwhelmed as apparent gas explosions were ripping through homes in three Massachusetts towns Thursday. At least 20 explosions have been reported.
Massive home explosions were reported in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover. Officials in North Andover have officially ordered an evacuation for the entire town.

Officials believe the cause was an over pressurization of a gas line which caused ruptures in multiple homes leading to leaks, explosions, and fires.
Lawrence police Chief Roy Vasque said, “It’s bad. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
The government there has activated the Emergency Operations Center in response.

I caught this on the news a little bit ago. I was thinking over-pressurized gas mains at first, just finding weak valves here and there. But looking at some of the homes on tv burning or exploded, some of them look like they had alot of work done recently by decent contractors.
Now I am leaning towards a specific IOT device, like a nest thermostat, or some other wifi controlled thermostat. This could possibly be a hack. And IOT devices are notorious for having no real password protection or proper encryption. If someone could turn on the gas valves, then force a pause in the igniters for about 15 minutes, this would match the dispersal pattern on the map in that area. I have my money on this being a hack, and it only affected some specific brand of thermostat and a specific model number, connected with a specific cell phone app.

An 18 year old died, 14 received at one hospital 2 critical. Another hospital said they received 6 so total is still unknown. They had calls for around 100 houses.

That happened a few miles down the road from me in Hutchinson KS a couple of decades (I think) ago. They were using salt caverns for gas storage and they were leaking.

The corporate parent of the Massachusetts natural gas utility that's the focus of explosions and fires that killed one and injured an estimated 25 had links to three previous gas line blasts, a review of federal and state records and court filings shows.
