A three-judge panel ruled Wednesday that Maryland officials violated the Constitution when they redrew the boundaries of the state’s 6th Congressional District to favor Democrats.

The unanimous decision (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/5030193-Benisek-v-Lamone-Opinion.html) requires state officials to draw new district lines for the 6th and 8th Districts by the 2020 election.

“With this unanimous ruling, the federal court is confirming what we in Maryland have known for a long time — that we have the most gerrymandered districts in the country, they were drawn this way for partisan reasons, and they violate Marylanders’ constitutional rights,” said GOP Gov. Larry Hogan, fresh off a convincing victory in his bid for a second term.

An earlier iteration of the case reached the U.S. Supreme Court (https://dailycaller.com/2018/03/28/supreme-court-bipartisan-gerrymandering/) on March 28, as the justices weighed several other constitutional challenges to partisan gerrymandering. Ultimately, the high court was unable to resolve those weighty questions (https://dailycaller.com/2018/06/18/supremes-duck-major-rulings-on-partisan-gerrymandering/), and returned the cases to lower courts for further proceedings of procedural and jurisdictional grounds.

The 6th District encompasses the western, conservative stretches of Maryland, then runs south to encompass the Washington, D.C., suburbs. After the 2010 census, Maryland Democrats recalibrated the district to fold in tens of thousands of D.C. area voters in a bid to oust former GOP Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, the longtime incumbent.

Can of worms. There are all manner of obviously Republican gerrymandered districts. It's a timely topic, however. Gerrymandering of any kind should be strictly verboten. It's just another example of corruption in government that everyone seems to ignore.

I get a kick out of democrat saying they are going to stop gerrymandering. Basically what they’re saying is they’re going to start democrat gerrymandering.

particularly vulnerable to gerrymandering. You can’t do that with Senate elections.

Uh democrats have brought republicans to court and some have been found legal and some illegal, its time for democrats to pay for their gerrymandering and their ILLEGAL VOTER REGISTRATION that is now being proven to be in many states.

Anyone registering or enabling someone to register or vote as an illegal immigrant should be put in PRISON

I don't know why the Court is involved. The Constitution has a method for how man Representatives a states gets. It says they are to be elected by the people. They have to be 21. Where the Courts have the right to determine districts is not there.

When districts start resembling geological maps of aquifers, something is very wrong. Illegal voter registration is just that, illegal - thus it's a matter for law enforcement. Those engaged in such practices should go to jail. Gerrymandering, on the other hand is legal, but shouldn't be.
