So we now know just about all the outcomes of the midterms. Which NEW victor (i.e. you cannot pick someone who was already a seated official before this election) most captured your attention and interest?

My pick is Sharice Davids, who was elected to represent the Kansas 3rd District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Davids is the first Native American to win election to any position in the U.S. Congress. She's also an open lesbian and a former MMA fighter who comes from a poor background and was raised by a single mom. She definitely qualifies as the most awesome and interesting of the victors as far as I'm concerned! To make matters even more perfect, she's representing a district from the conservative state of Kansas! I'll be following her political career closely. Here's a campaign ad that she ran (which is pretty epic as campaign ads go):

I know who you're talking about! I saw Kasie Hunt interview her on Kasie DC during the campaign.

EDIT: Oh wait, nevermind. I was thinking of someone else entirely.

Of course shes a republican, and she actually has a MAN

She won in a mostly hispanic district which they thought was insurmountable for her.

I don't know if she's cool, but I do know that she's as dumb as a post.

It costs a lot to live here, but it is still kind of sad.

...Like other major cities, D.C.'s housing issues are partly the fault of government policy: most notably, zoning laws that make it difficult to build new apartment buildings. The city council even moved to restrict Airbnb type arrangements—the exact kind of short-term housing Ocasio-Cortez is currently in need of—to appease residents who are fixated on the downsides of greater density (i.e., having more neighbors who occasonally make noise).

The free market could help alleviate housing shortages in D.C. and elsewhere, if only government would get out of the way. It's perfectly appropriate to criticize the kinds of anti-market policy prescriptions a socialist like Ocasio-Cortez is likely to recommend. But let's not beat up on her for failing to have as much access to wealth as the average member of Congress. This problem should inspire sympathy, not scorn.

Criticize Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Her Socialist Views, Not Her Struggle to Find Affordable Housing in D.C. (http://reason.com/blog/2018/11/10/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-dc-housing-rent)

There are a few different strategies the Dems will most likely consider.

The Dems could nominate a more moderate white male with middle American roots in order to win over some white middle class voters. That would certainly find opposition among the farther left leaning element of the Democratic Party.

The more left leaning element that want to promote and encourage diversity would love to nominate a woman of colour. But if that's done just for the sake of diversity, it would be a mistake and not a recipe for victory.

There could however be a tactical advantage to nominate a woman. Trump would certainly end up saying something misogynistic and idiotic at some point during the race. He can't help himself when he goes off script.

In the end, the Dems have to decide if they want to run a candidate that best represents their platform, or simply a candidate that has the best chance to beat Trump.

There has been some talk about Sherrod Brown...but I think whoever they nominate should come into the spotlight no earlier than late 2019.

Don't really know. Not expecting much more from them than we got from their predecessors . I will note that I voted for one donkephant. Kristen Gillibrand because of her past history of working with the other side and actually try to represent the people she represents and her role in curtailing congressional insider trading. I hope she continues to represent her people despite the shit the dem party has given her. In that regard they are far more controlling than the repubs who allow the candidate the people voted for to run and for differences of opinion within their party.

The fact that her detractors possess this sort of attitude toward poorer people is why she won both her upset primary victory and her actual election this last week. I relate a lot more to her than to you right here.

She was talking about DC. It's not cheap but she's going to make 174 thousand dollars a year.

The Dems could nominate a more moderate white male with middle American roots in order to win over some white middle class voters... Seeing that the Democrats are quickly drifting to the hard left, that seems highly unlikely.

Her detractors don't like here because she really is dumber than a bucket of hammers.

"... just pay for it".

Why would anyone want something like that in Congress?

Nonsense. She is going to make 174,000 dollars a year. What's poor about that? She's a dumbass.

I have always said we need more "regular people" in congress, that it's always high profile, money people running the show - but, that will never happen, so on one hand I do applaud that someone in their salad days got elected.

On the other hand she's a dunderhead. Millennials in general don't know shit about shit and she strikes me as a poser wannabee so I'm not taken back when you say you relate more to her, I would expect that.

Trust me, when her first paycheck rolls in and thereafter watch what she does with it. I'm guessing bankruptcy immediately after she loses office next term.

Nice virtue signaling, on her part too, but it has nothing to do with attitudes toward poor people when the socialism she advocates has not helped the poor to date.

Buckley once advocated picking people randomly out of the phone book. That and term limits might keep any politician from getting too powerful and becoming a target for rent seeking.

The left defines diversity only in terms of racial identity and sexual preferences. Diversity of thought and ideas is discouraged. In fact diversity of ideas is punished on the left. They want diversity as long as everyone is in ideological lock-step.

Actually Buckley didn’t advocate that. He said he’d rather be governed by names randomly selected from the Boston phone book vs the faculty of the Harvard law school.

Polly, that's not true. She won the nomination because the incumbent didn't run a campaign. She won the election because her district is heavily Democratic.

She is going to make 174,000 dollars a year. How does that relate to the poor? Not being able to pay rent on that income makes her stupid.

Well, to be fair the article says she's making like $26k or something now, in DC that's homeless wages.

Kind of like the NFL, when you start paying cement heads big money they'll immediately piss it away, kind of what I'm expecting here.

Make it a civic duty.
