Personally, I don't really care if the president engages in symbolic or ceremonial displays of patriotism. I'm far more concerned with the actual substance of the political policies that create so many dead and injured veterans. Unfortunately, we live in a country where a large percentage of the population are influenced more by symbols than they are by what the symbol actually represents, so instead of people becoming outraged over the appalling effects of all these unnecessary wars, they become outraged over the ceremonies that are meant to commemorate the unfortunate souls who died serving in those unnecessary wars. The use of symbolism, iconography, and ceremony to denude subject populations is a practice as old as civilization itself. And the US is certainly no different in that regard.

Past presidents got by with the appropriate display of concern and emotion. Action not required.

Did he wear a flag lapel pin, because that is truly the only gauge of patriotism the hard right recognizes....

Wasn't Trump in Europe on Nov 11th when Obama visited Arlington? It would have made a great story if Trump had asked Obama to attend the wreath laying ceremony on his behalf at Trump's request.
