USA Gymnastics declares bankruptcy - from news on the radio. They can't handle all the lawsuits over their creepy doctor.

Stay tuned for updates.

Sounds like they are doing it not because they can't handle the lawsuits financially, but because they want to protect themselves from having to go through the legal process of that (depositions and discovery, mainly).

The news report said they plan on settling the claims. But bankruptcy gives them a lot of power in a settlement. The victims are going to get short changed. And if they don't take a settlement and the organization goes under, they may get nothing.

The victims are/were not going to settle, or at least not all of them. When most/all of the senior members of an organization know that their head doctor for their top gymnasts is a sexual predator, the organization becomes liable. Changing out who runs the program or getting a new president doesn't address the many other people who knew. The Karolyis were the "fall guy". This is a massive organization that has a monopoly on the sport in the United States. Every gymnast in the country is paying the organization to be in the sport, or they aren't allowed to compete, basically.

The organization is doing this to limit their liability. The members of the organization who knew are in a bind.

The organization knew. It is not just about a few high ranking members. This is why a lot of the people suing them had no intention of settling. They can't hold them criminally liable but they can bring the organization to their knees.

This is just the organization trying to avoid it.

The victims may go into bankruptcy court and ask that judge to put his case on hold until the civil suit is over.

It's a shame that the organisation is held responsible and not those in the know who formed part of the criminality.

It's a shame that the organisation is held responsible and not those in the know who formed part of the criminality. The organization is reflected by the people who lead it.

I imagine they all will be named as defendants. But the organization has the deep pockets.
