I am against elected sheriffs, the best politician gets elected or the favored party in that county, not the best law enforcement leader.

There are counties in fla with sheriiffs with no prior law enforcement experience.

A guy I was in the Army with was elected sheriff in Pennsylvania somewhere. He had no law enforcement experience.

Electing sheriffs is a long standing tradition in the US. If not elected (and sometimes you don't get the best available to be sure) how would you choose who should be a sheriff? Baltimore used to have city chief of police appointed by the governor. That is no longer the case.

I would imagine the law has some strict requirements for the governor to fire an elected official.
