More than a third of New Yorkers say they can’t afford to live here (https://nypost.com/2019/03/20/more-than-a-third-of-new-yorkers-say-they-cant-afford-to-live-here/)
Its the local taxes, stupid. Now that federal deductions for state income taxes are capped at $10K, New Yorkers feel the pain of high local taxes. As they should. Hopefully they don't bring their toxic politics to wherever they move.
At least it’ll be easier to find a seat on the subway.
More than a third of all city residents say they can’t afford to live anywhere in the state — much less the Big Apple — and believe economic hardship will send them packing in five years or less, according to a dismal new poll.
That’s 41 percent of city dwellers who say they can’t cope with New York’s high cost of living, according to a Quinnipiac poll published Wednesday.
Separately, 41 percent fear they’ll be “forced” to pull up stakes and seek greener pastures where the economic climate is more welcoming.
“They are making this city a city for the wealthy, and they are really choking out the middle class,’’ said Ari Buitron, a 49-year-old paralegal and born-and-bred New Yorker from Forest Hills, Queens.
“A lot of my friends have had to move to Florida, Texas, Oregon. You go to your local shop, and it’s $5 for a gallon of milk and $13 for shampoo. Do you know how much a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment is? $1700! What’s wrong with this picture?”
And New Yorkers’ collective outlook seems to be getting worse — just 31 percent said they thought they’d have to leave when pollsters asked the same question in May.
City dwellers were not surprised their neighbors have such a bleak outlook.

Only $1700 for a one-bedroom? Heck of a lot more here in LA.
Anyway, it's not just the obvious taxes, it's the hidden taxes. Go ahead, force a "living wage" on businesses. Some will close, the rest will...raise prices. Of course.
If fascists weren't the stupidest people in the country, nobody would have voted for Bernie or Hillary.
LOL more failure by Democrats.

The deliberate creation of more dependency by an evil machine callously creating human misery to attract t the votes of people blind to what is actually being done to them and by whom.

I expect that 1 bdr in NYC would be very small (750 sq. feet max), very outdated, and in a shitty part of the city.

I'm not sure that it's the taxes...it's the super high rents and property values.

NYC has always been expensive to live in.
New York City was the only city in the country to have its own City Income tax, there may be more now.
So you pay NYC income tax
Theres a commuter tax for public trans
Theres a taxi ride tax
NYC sales tax is 8.875%
And whopping property tax if you own property

Many are citing the new tax law regarding caps on deducting state income taxes on your federal tax return. The major has made a big speech about it.

Actually, 750 for a one bedroom would be fairly roomy. I've seen 450 sq. foot one bedroom apartments.

I'm sure taxes play a part, but not nearly as big as rent. I have a friend at NYU who lives in the lower east side in a tiny one bedroom apartment. It's a lively but still not completely gentrified area and she lets me borrow it when she's not there. She pays over $3500 a month for it. It's about 500 square feet.

The mayor is full of crap, too.
The federal tax law capped the deduction of state income taxes to ten thousand dollars.
The people crushed by the ridiculous housing g prices in NYC don't pay that much in state income taxes.
And, guess waht? It's not the job of taxpayers outside New York to subsidize their fascistic confiscation tax system.

True, the cost of everything it high. I suspect the tax issue was the straw that broke the camel's back.

It really depends on where you live; if you live in the city or suburbs you'll pay (depending on property value) anywhere from $9 k to 27k or higher. Outside of the city/suburbs you'll pay anywhere between $3k to $6-7k per year. There are some tax breaks for seniors as well in the state. Housing can be expensive if you live in the cities and/or suburbs but unless you are working a low paying job, most people can afford the housing and taxes.

If there's two, they should both have a job and then their effective combined wage is $30/hr and they should be able to afford the bigger units.

Yet without a "living wage " of some sort the working poor and young middle class and old people and lots of others can't afford housing. Catch 22 created by greed and crony capitalism

What to pay someone who is not worth what you think a living wage is? Let them be homeless rather than have a job paying what they are worth?

The real issue is the housing cost. Why are they so high? If people working full time cannot afford housing you have a problematic economy. We all know that crony capitalism is part of that and that industrial construction in NYC is full of criminal behavior and payoffs.

Sky high taxes, fees, and over regulation, coupled with demand. This isn't rocket science.
And you're right, corruption plays a huge role.

Utter nonsense. When something is really screwed up you know politicians were involved.
When I worked we had a saying. "If you want a problem solved you send the problem to Huntsville. If you want it perpetuated you send it to Washington DC."

I believe that a true free market would address the problem. But the market is not free starting with the Fed cutting interest rates into the teeth of housing inflation and falsely increasing property values. People speak of the free market as if it still functions. Cases like this prove that it does not function as it should or nearly so.

How can it be utter nonsense when you are partially agreeing with me? Do you just get off on using the pompous phrase itself. Crony Capitalism, corporatism, the tilted table ALL involve politicians. And although it is indeed bad at the federal level one would be a fool to think that state and especially municipalities aren't involved as well.

Crony capitalism. nonsense. But politicians are involved. They pass rent controls which end the market for new rentals. They pass zoning regulations which, once again destroy the market. That is not crony capitalism unless you believe people are paying the politicians to screw things up.

Fascists. Never willing to admit their fault.
Housing shortages are always created by socialists controlling prices and limiting inventory. If capitalists were allowed to work their magic, there would be enough housing for all, with prices decently limited by the free market.
The greed is always in the heart of the lying socialists, and all socialists are liars.

Yeah, they wasted an entire lifetime not saving anything.
I guess they get to work until they're dead.
Which is what the Socialist Security Ponzi Scheme was originally set up to encourage.
But the socialists know this.

Rent control always drives up the cost of housing and always drives down the supply of units.
Always.
Friggin' Oregon is going to have fun, real damn soon.
Explain why a builder would want to build a new apartment complex when the government steps in and says they can't raise the rent to meet their expenses and otherwise burden the landlord to the point where they don't see any point in bothering.
Socialism, it sucks like a vampire.

Something for nothing is always the most expensive path to follow.
