“Washington has enjoyed the lowest unemployment rate of its peer group.”

“A remarkable seven of the ten highest-income counties in America are in metro Washington.”

“If you consider the claim that it’s becoming America’s new Second City an exaggeration, note that its huge recent growth has brought its economic size much closer to Chicago’s—not just in per-capita terms but in absolute ones, too.”

“An array of programs—the Sarbanes-Oxley and Dodd-Frank acts governing finance; the government’s auto-industry takeover; the EPA’s declaration that carbon dioxide is a pollutant—takes regulation to new levels of detail and intrusiveness, even extending to the micromanagement of particular companies.”

“…a wider and wider variety of businesses and organizations must be located there to lobby the government that decides their fate.”

“But it’s a loser for America. … the regulatory superstate depends on inflicting pain on the rest of the country, pain that only Washington itself can relieve—if you pay up and have the right connections, that is.”

“The region is prospering because it’s becoming something that would have horrified the Founders: an imperial capital on the Potomac.”

Hunger Games, USA?

“We don't live in The Hunger Games yet, but I'm not the first to notice that Washington, D.C., is doing a lot better (http://washingtonexaminer.com/take-me-down-to-the-parasite-city/article/2504159?custom_click=rss&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter#.UKvLDYWhA9c) than the rest of the country.”

“Washington is rich not because it makes valuable things, but because it is powerful. With virtually everything subject to regulation, it pays to spend money influencing the regulators.”

“…P.J. O'Rourke famously observed: (http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/26898.html)"When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators…”

“…Washington gets fat, and it does so on money taken from the rest of the country…”

“…it doesn't seem like a sign of national health that America's political capital is suddenly richer than our capitals of manufacturing and technology and finance, or that our leaders are more insulated than ever from the trends buffeting the people they're supposed to serve."

Is there any doubt why the federal government is loathed. It has become the enemy.

We often see liberals trot out the old strawman of "no regulations" and how horrible that would be.

How about a strawman death match?

The Houston Ship Channel burning or the Hunger Games? We got by quite nicely for a long time on the former. How long can we live with the latter?

D.C. is the heartland of the government cancer, which Obama has been adding to in droves. Of course it is doing well.

Works the same way with medical cancers--as the cancer prospers, the body dies.

Something else for Cigar to be proud of.

Darn ... and I thought that money on my account was real. :)

Cigar, as usual, lacks the understanding to see beyond his immediate situation (and bank account) into what is coming down the road. This is the classic short-sightedness of the uneducated liberal morons that are now in charge of this formerly great nation.

Yes, they've been extremely successful at enriching themselves at the expense of the rest of America.

The cancer is always the last one to die.

Well no matter whos in power DC will Continue to Thrive

Another Example of that is State Capitals

In most states the city with lowest unemployment and highest median incomes and most prosperous county will be that states Capital City

Much like DC the state capitol is the headquarters of state goverment and all the jobs

Despite New Year, Chicago Violence Continues
January 23, 2017 - There were three multiple-victim shootings this weekend on the streets of Chicago.

Tucked into the third row of a minivan, talking on FaceTime with a friend, Angela Wojcik wasn't paying much attention to the conversation of her boyfriend and his acquaintances in the front of the vehicle as it sat parked in West Town on Sunday morning. That was until the percussion of gunfire began shortly before 9 a.m. "The driver was bleeding from the mouth," said Wojcik, who lives in the suburbs and spent the previous night out at various clubs in the city. Police later identified the driver as a 26-year-old man who was shot in the lip. "It was blood over his whole face. It was so surreal," Wojcik said. Her boyfriend, 30, was hit twice in the right calf. The front passenger, who police said was a 25-year-old man shot in the left shoulder, appeared to be in the worst condition of the three, Wojcik said. "No one screamed," Wojcik said. "But I was FaceTiming with my friend Robert, and he was freaking out."

All three were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, police said. It was the second triple shooting of the morning Sunday. The other happened around 6:30 a.m. Hours later there was another shooting with multiple victims, this one leaving four people wounded at 12:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of West 63rd Street in the Englewood neighborhood. In all, 10 people were wounded in multiple-victim shootings within less than six hours Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon. "We've had quite a few multiple-victim incidents this weekend," said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman. There were six triple shootings from Friday afternoon to early Sunday afternoon, in addition to the quadruple shooting.

Police investigate the scene on the 1500 block of West Huron Street in Chicago, Ill. where three people were shot

The most seriously injured in the Englewood shooting was a 26-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the right eye and was taken by a family member to St. Bernard Hospital before being transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said. The others wounded were: Another 26-year-old man, shot in the right buttocks and left foot; a 56-year-old woman, shot multiple times in the left leg; and a 48-year-old woman shot in the right hip. All three were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where their conditions were stabilized. The four were in a convenience store when they heard gunshots and ran outside, where four armed men or boys shot them, police said. The four attackers got into a white sedan and fled the scene. No one was in custody.

In the first of the three multiple-victim attacks, three people were shot about 6:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of South Calumet Avenue in the Ida B. Wells/Darrow Homes neighborhood, according to police, correcting earlier information that the shooting happened on Rhodes Avenue. A 22-year-old man was shot in the left leg and was taken by a friend to Mercy Hospital. He was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A 24-year-old man was shot in the left leg, and his condition was stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A 23-year-old woman was shot in the leg, and her condition was stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The victims weren't being cooperative, and police had no narrative information on the shooting.

35 Shot, 8 Fatally, in Chicago Over Weekend
Jun 5, 2017 — Eight people were shot dead and 27 other people were wounded in attacks across Chicago over the weekend, including two shootings involving police officers from a summer mobile detail that happened 24 hours apart.

In the first police-involved shooting, officers fatally shot Corsean Lewis, 17, about 11:10 p.m. Friday in the Washington Park neighborhood, according to officials. Officers with the summer mobile unit had responded to a call of a person with a gun and were approaching a group of people when someone fired a shot at the officers, hitting the front bumper of the unmarked police car, according to officials. Officers returned fire, striking the teen multiple times, according to police. Officers found a gun at the scene, and they believe the teen was the one who had fired the shot at them, according to officials.

About 24 hours later, officers working a similar summer mobile unit farther south were involved in another shooting. A Chicago police officer and another man were both wounded. In that incident, a man ran from officers who had seen him drinking outside. He went into a nearby apartment building, where a struggle over a gun ensued between an officer and the man. An officer was shot in the hand, and the officer’s partner shot at the man, critically wounding him, police said. In addition to the police-involved shootings, two men were killed and six others were wounded within about an hour early Sunday. Among those killed was 41-year-old Edward Mason, who was shot in the head and chest just before 3:15 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sunday afternoon, Shantae Nevith, 22, was fatally shot in an apparent murder-suicide about 12:30 p.m. in the Logan Square neighborhood, police said. The 23-year-old man, who police believe shot Nevith, was found dead hours later from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. Despite the violent weekend, the number of people killed and shot in Chicago is down compared with last year, when gun violence rose to levels not seen in two decades.

The city has recorded 259 homicides this year compared with 271 this time last year, according to data compiled by the Chicago Tribune. The number of shooting victims has decreased by about 9 percent. As of Monday, 1,434 people had been shot compared with 1,588 people this time last year, according to Tribune data.

Most violent week so far this year in Chicago...

Chicago sees its most violent week of the year: 9 killed, 76 wounded
7 MAY `18 - The last seven days in Chicago have been the most violent week of the year, with just three police districts on the West Side bearing the brunt of the recent violence, according to data kept by the Tribune.

At least 85 people were shot between Monday, April 30, and this past Sunday, including a 4-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, a 15-year-old on a CTA bus, a young mother, several other young teens, a federal agent and two relatives of a gunshot victim waiting outside a hospital. Of those shot, at least nine died. The city had been averaging about 42 shootings each week this year, according to Tribune data. With last week’s shootings, the average rises to almost 45 people a week. The least violent period was the week of Feb. 5, when 16 people were shot in Chicago. Nearly half of those shot in the last week were hit by gunfire in three police districts that have long been troubled by violence: Harrison, Ogden and Austin.

At least 25 people were shot in the Harrison District, bounded roughly by Division Street, Roosevelt Road, Western Avenue and Cicero Avenue. One shooting last week wounded five people, including a young mother who was killed. There were two double-shootings within five hours on the same block of Madison Street over the weekend. A 12-year-old boy was seriously hurt. Another nine people were shot in the Ogden District, which borders Harrison on the south. They included two women wounded Saturday evening outside Mount Sinai Hospital while waiting to hear about a relative who had been shot earlier in the day. Five people were shot in the Austin District, which borders Harrison on the west, including a 16-year-old boy critically wounded Wednesday afternoon. In the Grand Central District, which borders Harrison on the north and extends into the Northwest Side, at last six people were shot, according to Tribune data.

A Chicago police officer talks with people at the scene of a shooting outside of the Mount Sinai Hospital emergency room in Chicago on May 5, 2018.

They included a man and a woman who were hit while driving down Cicero Avenue Saturday morning. The rest of the week's shootings were scattered among 11 other police districts across the city, including five shot in the Englewood District on the South Side and five in the Calumet District on the Far South Side. Police Department supervisors in the Harrison, Austin, Ogden and Grand Central districts have been analyzing shooting data in real time through a computer program called HunchLab to quickly determine where to best deploy patrol and tactical officers. The deployments are integrated with ShotSpotter gunshot detection technology, which tells officers in the field where gunfire is coming from on their work-issued smart phones.

The technology is used at Strategic Decision Support Centers, where police district personnel analyze data projected on large TV screens displaying crime maps and surveillance video footage from police cameras in neighborhoods. The recent burst of violence brings the number of people shot in the city this year to at least 804, according to data kept by the Tribune. That's below the previous two years, when violence hit record levels. Last year at this time, 1,087 people had been shot. In 2016, the number was 1,199. But this year's numbers are still substantially higher than other recent years. Homicides have followed the same pattern, with at least 161 this year. That compares to 198 this time last year, and 205 in 2016, according to Tribune data.
