For the first time in history, a so-called president Trump has a cabinet populated by actors. I wonder why and why is it necessary for them to be referred to as acting as opposed to being a legitimately titled cabinet member? Is this not a legitimate so-called presidency or is it a acting presidency?
Trump was surrounded by Acting Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler, Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, and Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan. Some of the acting officials have been acting for a while, like Wheeler, a former coal lobbyist, who's nearing the end of his allowed 210 days (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/andrew-wheeler-epa-acting-administrator_us_5bc76f92e4b0a8f17ee8b2a9) as acting EPA chief. Others, like Bernhardt, took over more recently; his predecessor, Ryan Zinke, left his office Wednesday after writing an official resignation note in red Sharpie (https://www.washingtonpost.com/energy-environment/2019/01/02/interior-secretary-zinkes-parting-note-has-critics-seeing-red/). The rules about how long someone can serve in an acting capacity are kind of complicated, but you can puzzle through them at Lawfare (https://www.lawfareblog.com/acting-accordingly-acting-officers-and-federal-vacancies-reform-act).
