Maine Democrats Want $100 Million Tax On Poland Spring, Critics Warn It Will Hurt Economy.....

https://media.townhall.com/townhall/reu/ha/images/2019/96/6c743c37-b195-43ef-a83b-e10f1ba9088b.png

Democratic state representatives in Maine want to cash in on one of the state's consistently successful business -- Poland Spring -- by establishing a water tax that would be only for the popular brand, and raise more than $100 million in taxes for the state. But, many point out the unfairness -- crafting a tax specifically for one company -- and warn this idea will deter futures businesses from opening in the Pine Tree State.

The tax would require the company to pay 12 cents to the state per every gallon that the company uses from Maine's natural resources, nearly 960 million gallons of water a year.

“We need the revenue,” the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Lori Gramlich, D-Old Orchard Beach, told the Portland Press Herald. (https://www.pressherald.com/2019/04/05/poland-spring-might-get-soaked-with-100-million-state-tax/) …..snip~

Here the Demos are doing what? Singling out one company to pay a tax and not just the Water Industry. What does that tell you?

Such a tax would be unconstitutional at the federal level. I wonder if the Maine constitution would allow it.

An interesting situations. For those of you who think I exist only to bash big companies my opinion here might not be what you would think. Designing a tax for one company , flat ass wrong and an incredibly slippery sloped issue that could wind up have far reaching and unintended consequences . I can see Coors being next.

On the other hand who does own the water? I live on a lake. But a kayak could pull up between my doc and the shore and legally fish. And it's not just water, some people don't own the mineral rights under their own land.

Bottom line this law needs to be scrapped but the issue will not and perhaps should not go away altogether. Did you know that at one time, possibly still, Colorado citizens could not legally catch RAINWATER but Coors ... well they ship a few gallons a year clear out of state. Poland may not own the land over where some of the water they draw comes from. But the guy next door might be in the same boat with his well. Start taxing those and you'll find yourself unelected.

I'm not worried though as clearly the federal government and state governments will come up with a sensible, fair solution. I'm, just kidding of course, sit back and watch over the next few years as they use this as a cash cow without say earmarking a dime for conservation but getting a raise every single year!
BTW, the tax might start with Poland but it will not end with them

Sounds like desperation to me

Maine is in trouble

Their population is aging and the young are leaving for better jobs in other states

Now they're pandering to immigrants from hell holes from all all over the world

It's truly going in the chitter

A lot of their problems stem from being the 2nd most atheist state in the union(Not producing kids)

Why wait? I am sure there are plenty of States not run by evil men and women who would happily invite them to come set up shop.

Just do it.

Simple

They tend to be unwed and not produce large families

Again, Maine's population is aging to prove my point

Also, the few young people they have are leaving for better jobs elsewhere

Make sense?

They'd have to buy a spring somewhere. I suppose some states might market to them , it's hard to say. Then again bottled water is largely a joke , I've read more than one label and found out it was "municipally bottled". (a.k.a. Tap Water. LOL
Watertown, NY once floated the idea of bottling water from the "Black River". Hint it's not named the "Black River" for it's crystal clear appearance and has had industry upstream back in the day when you tossed your by product chemicals in the river.
The idea never gathered any steam, thank god. I guess at least with Polland you know the water came from a spring.

Well the Repubs were Right about lowering taxes. Also Right about building up the Military after the Demos weakened the Country.

Got it
Dems= All Bad, evil incarnate
Repubs = All ,good God's messengers

The "other side" causes ALL the division.

Except various mixtures of power have failed to even balance a budget over the past 18 or so years. Also when was the country militarily "Weak"?
I must have missed that somehow.

Yes Demos and leftists all bad. Think of them as diseases that need to be cured. One way or another.

No not all Repubs are good. Hence the Liberal Repubs, Neo Cons/Demo lite.

As soon as the Demos took the Navy down to less than 300 ships. When they cut the Air Force down. Failed to keep them uptodate. Repair and replace. Neglected the Nuke Subs and when they cut Military R&D allowing Russia to surpass us in some tech. Then cutting the Marines and Army personnel down to levels equal to what we had during WWII. Then Cutting Combat Readiness. Then weakening our borders.

Look into what the Demo Gen Kelly said when he was in charge of Southern Command. Even he had a problem with it.
