The number of Democrats who view illegal immigration as a “crisis” tripled this month.
According to a new poll by ABC/Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/page/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2019/04/30/National-Politics/Polling/question_21368.xml?uuid=2Wlk-Gs2Eem75xx5j7gFNg#) released Tuesday, 24% of Democrats view the border situation as a crisis, up from 7% in January.
A full 72% of Democrats view illegal immigration as either a “crisis” or “a serious problem.” Only 27% of Democrats say illegal immigration is “not a serious problem.”
Customs and Border Protection announced over 100,000 apprehensions (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/top-us-border-official-the-breaking-point-has-arrived-with-100-000-encounters-in-march) and encounters with migrants at the border during March, the highest amount in one month since 2007. Immigration officials are expecting April to be just as bad.
“Apprehensions by USBP, currently at levels not seen in a decade, will approach one million in FY19 unless actions are immediately taken,” said a report from the Homeland Security Advisory Council (https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/publications/19_0416_hsac-emergency-interim-report.pdf).
The report cites a 600% surge of families migrating (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/dhs-report-1-million-illegal-immigrants-expected-this-year-53-077-family-units-in-march) from Central America as responsible for bringing “immigration management systems to the point of collapse.”
President Trump declared a national emergency (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/white-house/trump-declares-national-emergency-to-build-border-wall-stopping-virtual-invasion) in February to secure funding for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Pentagon announced last week (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/pentagon-changing-border-policy-sending-300-troops-to-the-border) it was planning on approving 300 more troops to the border in the support role, joining approximately 5,000 National Guard troops at the border.
