The Violence Against Women Act reauthorization passed through the Senate on Tuesday afternoon, by a vote of 78 to 22. Of those opposing the legislation, all 22 were Republican men. Every female Senator supported the bill.

Among the most notable votes against the bill were Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). Here’s a look at all 22 opponents of VAWA:

VAWA expired during the previous Congress, and because of Republican opposition to provisions for Native American, undocumented, and LGBT victims of domestic violence, the different versions approved by the House and by the Senate were never reconciled, and the bill died without final passage at the end of 2012.

The version passed by the Senate today will next go to the House for a vote, where it is expected to encounter some difficulties, particularly over the protections of tribal women included in the bill.

Strange people those 22 .
Presumably the world would be a more morally honest place without them.

So, 22 politicians saw the legislation for what it is. A handout to the trial lawyers.
There is already legislation that protects women against violence. It's the same legislation that protects EVERYONE against violence.

Why are women more important than men, Cigar?

How about a violence against everyone act?

No wait, that's not racist/sexist enough for the Dems.

Majority of violence that is domestic or sexual is committed against women; it makes sense to have some kind of legislation relating to that.

That said, I'm not surprised about the no votes. There were some controversial items in the legislation.

And the majority of gang violence is perpetrated by blacks and hispanics. Point that out to anyone and you get called a racist.

Why is it okay for the Dems and not for us?

Gang violence is usually reciprocated. Being raped and abused, not so much...

So because women aren't able to pass it on to someone else, it's okay to be sexist?

They need protection and a plan for protection. The time a domestic abuse survivor is most at risk of being killed is when she leaves the abusive relationship. There needs to be a plan in place to deal with this. And no, it can't be dealt with at the State level because dumbass Conservatives have lowered, and lowered the amount of funding to rape and domestic violence support centres. Then you have to consider that in metropolitan areas, there are thousands upon thousands of untested rape kits sitting in storage. Those areas don't have the funding to test them - they need money, money which their city or state either can't or won't give them. Thus, you require federal grants and funding assistance.

Someone gets shot by a gang? Police can investigate. Get raped and get a rape kit? Wait 25+ years to find out you're never going to know anything and your rapist is going to walk free.

Edit: I don't think all Conservatives are dumbasses. Just the ones who lower funding to support centres.

Police can investigate a rape too.
Sometimes gang members aren't caught after shootings.

You need a better argument than emotional pandering.

Did you hear what I said about rape kits? They don't have the resources to test a vast majority of them. How do you investigate a rape without the most essential evidence?! This is common sense.

Then Obama needs to quit spending so much money so that we can put that money into things that are more important. Like rape kits.

I would agree with that statement.

And I just did some research; it's about half a million untested rape kits in the US right now. Many of those are from before DNA testing (pre-1990, basically), but hundreds of thousands are from after DNA testing became available.

I thought the Leftninnies were all about "equality".

Please explain where the "equality" is on making it MORE OF A CRIME to HARM WOMEN, OR GAYS, LESBIANS, ETC., than it is to harm ANY OTHER PERSON?

The Native Americans want jurisdiction over non reservation residents, but allow no outside jurisdiction over reservation residents; where's the "equality" in that?

Ever actually RESEARCH yourself, or do you always just accept the spoon feedings that "DunceDigress" gives you?

They can handle their own finances. Though, I'm at a loss as to how that is relevant to the thread.

Was violence against women legal before this statute came along?

The measure does look like a playground for trial lawyers.

Aside from the obvious inaccuracies, what evidence to you have to support your claims? Hysterical claims don't cut it.

Much of our legislation is pro-trial lawyer considering that many of our legislators are trial lawyers and are sympathetic to the Bar lobby.
