There's substantial research indicating differences in liberal and conservative brains. The definitive study, published by Hatemi et al (http://ussc.edu.au/s/media/docs/publications/18_Hatemi_et_al_LinkageGW_JOP.pdf), analyzed the DNA of 13,201 Australians and found several genes that differentiated between liberals and conservative. A literature review, by Jost et al (http://faculty.virginia.edu/haidtlab/jost.glaser.political-conservatism-as-motivated-social-cog.pdf) found personality factors that distinguish between liberals and conservatives: threat sensitivity and openness to experience. ABC (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2012/09/03/conservatives-and-liberals-have-different-brains-studies-show/) summarized, "Democrats had larger anterior cingulate cortexes, which are associated with tolerance to uncertainty, while Republicans had larger right amygdalas, which are associated with sensitivity to fear." Liberals ask, "Why can't we all get along? And conservatives respond, "Why are you threatening traditional values?"

It'd be interesting to know the age differences in this study between the dems and republicans...I think there's a lot of truth to the idea that people are generally more liberal when they're younger and as they get older get more conservative. That would -- as a big but reasonable generalization -- mean dems in their younger years end up as republicans. I don't think that's a product of brain changes, just life experiences (and paying taxes )

If you pay attention to your paycheck and the taxes taken out- that tends to wake people up.

Yeah Puff Po. But obviously Liberals have no fear, how else to explain getting stuck on ideas that don't work and riding them right down the crapper?

We motorcycle guys have a saying: There's old riders and there's bold riders but not too many old, bold riders. Once could look at this study which is probably pure BS and come to the conclusion that while conservatives seem to have the sense not to repeatedly put their hands on top of hot stove burners, you can't say the same for the lefty idiots.

Conservatives are more open-minded and tolerant according to the research of John Haidt summarized in Liberals or Conservatives: Who’s Really Close-Minded? (http://www.american.com/archive/2012/april/liberals-or-conservatives-who2019s-really-close-minded).

What makes a Republican, which is a different matter altogether, is simply registering as one, or voting Republican I suppose.

Research like this is analogous of a fundamental problem facing the scientific community. Money is given to find a specific answer, not the truh.

See the recent global warming scandals.

You'll find the exact opposite argument in research regarding who is open-minded and tolerant. Any argument can be supported by facts because it is a subjective area of science. The brain is still mysterious. fMRI scans don't lie, but interpretation of the different areas and their exact functions will vary from researcher to researcher, and obviously it will depend on who is funding the research...

Haidt bases his conclusions on interview questions with subjects. His questions are available here: http://www.yourmorals.org/explore.php

But I agree, determining who or even what is conservative, liberal or libertarian is subjective.

Another part of the problem is defining terms. What is liberal, what is conservative? Many of these studies focus on only a particular type of liberal or conservative. I guess it is hard in American politics because we only have two real political parties. Each is made up of many different groups.

As far as conservatives go, there are big differences between religious right conservatives, NEOCONS, and fiscal conservatives.

R850R BMW. And I'm 68 years young. If you want to ride at this age, you have to be in shape and you have to do strength training so you can handle 500 pounds of moto.

Some of the guys I ride with are 10 years older.

I'm looking forward to riding down to where Patrick lives, maybe this fall after the rains end but before it gets "chilly." That's below 60 degrees here.

You really want to know what makes a Republican, just read the collective post in this forum and you'll get a fare idea where people really stand.

That will answer a lot of your questions.

Case closed.

Well, we will certainly get to know where you stand regrading racial discrimination. You support it as long as it's not impacting blacks negatively.

Anyway, who is a Republican here? There are a few but who do you have in mind?
