Source: Authorities have image of suspect dropping black bag near Boston Marathon terror bombing scene; investigation seen ‘ very close’

An official briefed on the Boston Marathon bombing investigation said today that authorities have an image of a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene on Boylston Street, outside of the Forum restaurant.

Investigators are “very close” in the investigation, said the official, who declined to be named.

That official said authorities may publicize their finding as early as this afternoon.

The same official also said a surveillance camera at Lord & Taylor, located directly across the street, has provided clear video of the area, though it was unclear whether the image of the suspect was taken from that camera.

Authorities planned to brief the media on the progress of the investigation at 5 p.m. today.

“The camera from Lord & Taylor is the best source of video so far,” said Dot Joyce, a spokeswoman for Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “All I know is that they are making progress.”

AP tweeted about 3 minutes ago that an arrest is "imminent" and "suspect to be brought to court".

somehow i don't think this guy is going to want to hang around boston and be let out on bail.... for his own protection.

I saw it on Yahoo! News but have since learned that no suspect has been arrested

Authorities have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings and forcefully denied news reports that an arrest had been made in the attack Wednesday afternoon. The Associated Press and the Boston Globe reported a suspect had been arrested and was en route to the Moakley Federal Courthouse in South Boston. CNN also reported that a suspect was in custody, before backtracking from its earlier report and saying no suspect had been nabbed. The Boston Police Department and the US Attorney's office in Boston denied those reports on Wednesday afternoon, saying no arrest had been made.
The FBI issued a sternly worded rebuke to the press for reporting that a suspect was in custody.
"Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack," Special Agent Greg Comcowich said in the statement. "Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate. Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting."

While a source told the Globe that a person had been taken into custody and other news organizations reported the same, based on their own sources, the US attorney’s office, the FBI, and Boston police issued statements saying no one had been arrested.

“Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack,” the FBI said. The agency, which is leading the bombing probe, asked the media to “exercise caution” and check with official channels before reporting information.

Meanwhile, the city’s federal courthouse, where a large contingent of media had gathered in anticipation of an appearance by the suspect, has been evacuated this afternoon because of a bomb threat. Hundreds of people are outside. A caravan of large law enforcement vehicles just pulled up. People are being pushed a block back from the courthouse. US Coast Guard and Boston police boats are also stationed in the waters outside the courthouse.

A Globe source with knowledge of the case said earlier in the day that an image had been captured of a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene on Boylston Street, outside of the Forum restaurant.

That official said authorities may publicize their findings as early as this afternoon. A news conference was slated for 5 p.m.
The official also said a surveillance camera at Lord & Taylor, located directly across the street, has provided clear video of the area, though it was unclear whether the image of the suspect was taken from that camera.

“The camera from Lord & Taylor is the best source of video so far,” said Dot Joyce, a spokeswoman for Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “All I know is that they are making progress.”

I guess we probably won't learn anything much for another hour until they have the press conference. If they're still looking for the suspect I hope they release some video / photos to help in the hunt.

This is the explanation for the earlier reports about B & W Hospital being evac'd

In a sign of how jittery the marathon bombings have left Boston, a portion of Brigham and Women’s Hospital was evacuated at about 3 p.m. Wednesday after a person pulled up to the valet entrance at 45 Francis St. and left the car unattended and apparently locked.

Valets noticed gas cans inside and security ordered an evacuation of the building out of an abundance of caution “because it’s post-marathon,” hospital spokeswoman Erin McDonough said.

After a few minutes, people were allowed to return inside.

lol check-out this story of typical misinformation passed along in the heat of the moment...

At around 2:55 p.m. on Monday outside Hotel Commonwealth, a young man looked up from his phone and said to a friend: “Two bums are blocking the race.” His friend asked him what he was talking about. “I don’t know. He just called and said that there were two bums at the finish line, I guess they were laying down and asking for money or something. Sounded like it was disrupting the race.”

That overheard dis-information would be the first in a long stream I heard on the day of the Boston Marathon bombing, but with dropping or non-existent cell phone reception, being closer to the explosions often meant knowing less than those across the country. As it turns out, as time passes, new reports continue to mix facts, misinformation, and hoaxes.

The cause of cellular outages themselves were misreported: The Associated Press reported that a law enforcement official stated (http://www.nola.com/running/index.ssf/2013/04/boston_marathon_explosions_for.html) “cellphone service has been shut down in the Boston area to prevent any potential remote detonations of explosives.”

But as the Globe’s Michael B. Farrell reported today, the cellular dropoff was unintentional, caused by overwhelming loads and not an intentional anti-terror tactic (http://bostonglobe.com/business/2013/04/16/cellphone-networks-overwhelmed-blast-aftermath/wq7AX6AvnEemM35XTH152K/story.html).

The back and forth is likely to continue.

That's true...but I also think it was CNN that said Giffords was dead and that Ryan Lanza (not Adam) was the killer in Sandy Hook...and I realize it's people like me that give them financial incentive to rush this stuff out. I should stop supporting them.

Situations like this expose the major media outlets for really what they are... A bunch of childish vultures looking to be the first to say something so people will watch them more and they will be popular and stuff... So they report on baseless claims, half-truths, rumors and heresay on the off chance they will get it right... When they get it wrong, they usually kick it under the rug and let people believe whatever they believe...

In an era of 24/7 news this is inevitable. The best we can do is stop listening or watching. I read the initial reports and some news feeds but I knew they would be saying the same shit 458 ways for the rest of the day. I just avoided the media.

I've had CNN on a few times lately.

You cannot listen long before they mention McVeigh, Rudolph,"white supremacy", etc.

Wuff should STFU until facts are known.

One thing for internet chatters to speculate, quite another for so-called news to degenerate into gossip.

I simply find it despicable, as I've said elsewhere, that some entity that sees itself as a source of news and commentary tries to politicize such a tragedy.

I'm curious though as to whether the FBI leaked the earlier reports of an arrest for some purpose. An FBI agent was interviewed on some news program last night and he said in cases like this they have a basic choice, to reveal to the public what they know, to some degree, hoping the public can identify and locate the suspect, or not because revealing such info could scare off the suspect. So what if they ware surveilling some suspects and released the info to see if they ran?

Yes, yes, pure speculation, I know.

Peter1469

I would doubt that the FBI leaked the info. Boston police are know to leak often.
