The battle actually began yesterday and was the first in Grant's campaign to pummel Lee's Army Of Northen Virginia into submission. May 6th was the mid point of this three day, inconclusive melee. The fighting, while fierce, was not only inconclusive but difficult in the tangled underbrush. Officers had difficulty moving their men or even knowing exactly where they were. The battle is of special significance because, instead of retiring to Washington like his predecessors, Grant disengaged and continued moving south.

Interestingly, the battle was fought over the same terrain and at the same time as the Battle of Chancellorsville a year before.

Chancellorsville's battlefield included the heights fought over during the Battle Of Fredericksburg the previous year, Virginia rich with overlapping civil war battlefields.
