Watching a 'scandal' evaporate before our very eyes

Rachel noted on the show last night that the controversy surrounding Benghazi effectively "went away" yesterday, and given the latest information, it's hard to imagine how any serious person could disagree. The White House yesterday afternoon released the inter-agency communications that went into crafting the "talking points" requested by Congress last September. Lawmakers already saw these materials months ago -- they found nothing controversial at the time -- but Republicans and the media decided it was time to see them again...we learned what we already knew: there was no cover-up; State and the CIA engaged in a predictable bureaucratic "tug of war"; and this:

The internal debate did not include political interference from the White House, according to the e-mails, which were provided to congressional intelligence committees several months ago.

And with that, everything Republican conspiracy theorists desperately wanted Americans to believe -- there's a scandal; there's a cover-up; there's evidence the White House manipulated and lied about a crisis for political ends -- suddenly evaporated before our very eyes...note that most sensible people realized the right's conspiracy theories were wrong, which is why the so-called "controversy" was relegated to Republican media, until last Friday's report from ABC News pushed the story into the mainstream. That ABC News report, we now know, was wrong. There's just nothing left. Trying to characterize this as a genuine political story worthy of attention has been a misguided partisan exercise for months, but now, it's reached the point of ridiculousness. Every reporter saying the White House is engulfed in "three scandals" is misleading the public -- there was a deadly attack against a U.S. diplomatic outpost last year, which left four Americans dead. It was a tragedy; it was not a political controversy.

Put a fork in the Benghazi story; it's done.

Does Rachel often employ logical fallacies like poisoning the well to push her opinions?

Well, if maddow says it done that means.......absolutely nothing.

The next talking point will be that Stevens was offered extra security but turned it down.

I almost sure Rachel Maddow wasn't in Benghazi ... almost. :)

You hope this is over, it's actually blowing up in your face. And the reason the White House sent out email chains last night proving Hillary and Jay Carney total liars. Susan Rice as well.

This makes the Obama Admin look like shit. Weak and leaderless but of course, they didn't need this incident to convince me. This President is a joke.

While there have been two embassy attacks and four deaths during the four-plus years of the Obama administration, this represents a significant slowdown in such violence’.

‘During the eight years of the Bush administration there were eleven such attacks on U.S. embassies and consulates, with 52 deaths. So why are these attacks suddenly front and center in the headlines, even as they become more rare’?

‘Benghazi was the first embassy attack to be politicized, as republicans in congress attempted to turn the attack into a scandal or controversy in an effort to hinder Obama’s reelection bid, and more recently to hamper any future presidential ambitions of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’.

‘None of the eleven attacks during the Bush adminstration were politicized by democrats in congress’.

So, Jillian, which of these were blamed on something other than terrorists? How many innocent filmmakers were imprisoned for over 8 months for doing nothing more than exercising his 1st Amendment rights? How many of those incidents had requests for security or help turned down, or had troops that were ready and willing to help, ordered to stand down?

Eagerly awaiting enlightenment...

You mean by not taking Bin Laden into custody after the Sudanese offered him up?
Or do you mean because his CIA and FBI were prevented from talking to each other by a wall put up by administration of the same man who refused to take Bin Laden into custody?

Bush did not case 911 and yes he had some evidence that something might be going on. Is your answer to shut down aviation on a hunch. I was sitting on the runway in Dallas on 911 to fly to Boston, it could have been me just as easy but I didn't blame Bush for it. Obama has not accepted any responsibility for anything since taking office.

This another '4 stated reasons' post from you, toss whatever into the fan, let it spray on the wall, see what sticks, @jillian (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=719)

Nevermind that still...there is no link to your now proven to be utterly manufactured 'OBL's 4 stated reasons' you tried to mislead everyone with.....when my devastating to your argument rebuttal was given, it included the fact that the hatred, the organization, the training necessary, the resolve and determination to carry out such a horrific attack...was established while Bush was the Governor of Texas.

Bush shares in the blame as it occurred on his watch, but as you've never understood why we were targeted in the first place, you cannot make reasoned arguments suggesting incompetence. That tack merely makes you sound partisan and petty.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (KSM) in Hamburg early 1999, meets with 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta and hijacker associate Ramzi bin al-Shibh. Together, they make plans to carry out the 9/11 attacks in the US. In December of 1999, 9/11 hijackers Mohamed Atta, Ziad Jarrah, Marwan Alshehhi, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, and Nawaf Alhazmi met to discuss the 9/11 operation at a building known as the “House of Alghamdi” in Kandahar, Afghanistan. W is the Governor of Texas. The CIA and Germans all over these cats who came and went from Germany and Afghansitan, Mohamed Atta and other hijackers rented rooms in NYC by the Spring of 2000, this proven later by a investigation, immigration records(always clueless) have Mohamed Atta entering the US for the first time on June 3, 2000.

Why are they so pissed? In the year 2000, why the plans in 1999? jillian promised to give us the "4 stated reasons" although we've never actually been linked to the first stated reason much less 4.

One must understand why we were attacked.....what was their main bone of contention. Jillian claims it was because we had female troops on some Saudi base, was that the source of their rage?

There would not have been an attack on the embassy in Bengazi if the USA had not bombed Libya and hired thousands of Talmu-"Islamic" terrorists to murderously rampage through the country.

I heard that the dead ambassador was deeply involved in bringing in the terrorists and arming them.

Perhaps he died because he knew too much.
