I often praise Venezuela, but I must do so again: the country's new labor law (they enact one every May Day) gives housewives the right to government pensions (https://www.commondreams.org/view/2013/05/17-3) as part of the country's quest to achieve gender parity and obliterate poverty along the road to socialism. Latin America in general has taken a more progressive and independent turn in the last 15 years or so, but Venezuela continues to lead the charge in a specifically socialistic, egalitarian direction. Present Gini coefficient data shows that Venezuela has the most equitable wealth distribution in Latin America. This new measure will only help further close that gap, to say nothing of ending a form of slave labor in that country and improving the social standing of women.

Once again we have to hae the dream of Socialism and Communism@

But we can in fact state that the close the wealth gap in conntries, but not by helping the poor but by takeing from those that have and spending the money so everyone but the political eliete are poor!

Here is what we know about the policies

http://blogs.reuters.com/breakingviews/2013/03/05/chavezs-economic-program-did-everything-but-work/

Poverty is still above 33% in the country

And the gosse that was laying the golden egg (oil) is on the decline, with no forgien investors in the country, they do not have the resources for expansion of this industry. Thus production has dropped 25% from it highs!

And the worst type of inslavement is the inslavement of the people to a tyrantical govenment that would take away the possibilty of them improving their lot in life in the name of equality!

LOL. Are you still praising Venezuela? They're rationing electricity. This country is a complete disaster.

Has the trainwreck of socialist policies "helped the social standing of women"? I guess the goal was accomplished: the gap has closed cause everyone is fucked! Clueless socialist, have you learned anything from this mess?

Progressives live in the now, and like to deny to obvious long-term implications of the policies they endorse.

I was reading Drudge and saw an article about how the country is in bad shape, and I remembered reading here a few years ago that some members really loved the "progress" Venezuela was making. I decided to dig up a thread on it.

So, how's that .gov pension working out for housewives in Venezuela?

Is there anyone that can explain the utter failure in Venezuela, and why socialist programs like the one in the OP shouldn't be blamed?

Venezuelan president to expand welfare health program amid economic crisis
Aug. 22, 2016 -- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has vowed to expand a welfare healthcare program to all of the South American country's states by early 2017.

The Misión Barrio Adentro, or Into the Neighborhood Mission, was created by late former President Hugo Chavez in 2003. The program seeks to provide publicly funded healthcare, including dental care, to impoverished Venezuelan communities. The program, credited for decreasing infant mortality rates, was initially praised by the World Health Organization and UNICEF but the program has waned in recent years as many of the thousands of clinics built under the program became abandoned and the medical personnel who operated within them -- mostly Cuban medics -- left.

In a speech at the Venezuelan presidential palace, Maduro said the government still has the capacity to improve the program -- despite the crippling economic crisis the country faces. "We have made great progress in caring for children, youths and the population in general, but we could still do more, because we have resources to do so," Maduro said Saturday. "This program should be implemented as a prioritized policy to guarantee better quality of life for all Venezuelans."

Maduro said he rejects the call to return Venezuela's healthcare system to a privately run institution. "No. No to capitalism. No to social, political and economic regression of our country," Maduro said. Venezuela is undergoing a critical economic crisis in which basic necessities including medicines and food are either in short supply or not available.

Lol, did you know that there is no evidence Marie Antoinette ever said "Let them eat brioche (cake)"? And that Louis XVI was actually a kind and gentle man who refused to use his armed forces against his people? And that his massive financial and military support of the American Revolution bankrupted France? Isn't history interesting!

They are broke. They just outlawed lines outside because they were upset about people standing in line to by bread.

Holy moley people, talk about digging up an old thread!

Well anyway, while I'm qualitatively less enthusiastic about Venezuela's government today than I was back in 2013 when I posted this thread, I still like the idea of them expanding their health care program.

They can't pay for any health care program existing much less make more. They are broke and fast heading towards currency collapse.

Venezuela's foreign reserves down 66%...

Venezuela's foreign reserves, mostly in gold, down to $10.5B
March 2, 2017 -- The Central Bank of Venezuela, or BCV, said the country has $10.5 billion in foreign reserves, mostly in gold, which amounts to a 66 percent decrease since 2011.

Venezuela has $7.2 billion in outstanding debt payments for the rest of 2017. In 2011, the South American country had about $30 billion in reserves and it had about $20 billion in 2015, BCV records show.

About $7.7 billion of Venezuela's remaining $10.5 billion in foreign reserves are gold. The South American country is facing an economic crisis.

Venezuela is facing a political and economic crisis in which basic goods such as food and medicine are in short supply, unavailable or unaffordable. The United Nation's Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean predicts Venezuela's gross domestic product will decrease 4 percent in 2017, while the International Monetary Fund estimates inflation will increase 1,600 percent.

A survey found that nearly 75 percent of the population lost an average of at least 19 pounds in 2016 due to a lack of proper nutrition amid the economic crisis. About $7.7 billion of Venezuela's $10.5 billion in foreign reserves is made up of gold. Early last year, Venezuela sold more than 40 tons of gold -- about $1.7 billion -- to pay debts.

Give me a break. Couple choose to have children and must consider the fiscal risk. They're in school most of the day after 5 years anyway. Make a choice , deal with it. The fact is they aren't producing any revenue , therefore aren't paying taxes into the socilaist fund pool and someone outside their family will wind up footing the bill

Oh the socialist paradise of Venezuela!!

If you think it's such a great place, why don't you just go to live there? Or maybe you are there already?

Then you can help the hungry people there retrieve and reprocess food from garbage. That's what it has come to in some places.

Socialists are clinically insane. They try the same thing over and over again and expect a different result each time.

So, they get a pension that allows them to buy a box of cereal if they can find a box of cereal. How fucking wonderful. In the U.S., we give people checks every month to sit on the couch and watch television.

Their economy is near collapse. A pension wage likely doesn't buy a loaf of bread.

I hear they are offering a choice to the housewives. Take the pension or be given toilet paper. I hear the mothers are choosing the latter.

My wife was a stay-at-home Mom. Well, except she played tennis eight-hours a day and was the number one ranked woman's tennis player in the city. If the kids had a problem I'd get a phone call. There stay-at-home Mom was never available.
