Reuters) - Baseball home run king Barry Bonds should receive no jail time for his conviction on a single criminal count related to an investigation of steroids in sports, his attorneys argued in a court filing on Tuesday.
A Northern California jury convicted Bonds in April on one count of obstruction of justice, but deadlocked on three other counts of lying to a grand jury.

Bonds is scheduled to be sentenced in a San Francisco federal court on December 16. In a sentencing memorandum submitted on Tuesday, his attorneys said Bonds deserved probation.
Among the reasons for no prison, Bonds' lawyers cited a long history of good works, done away from the public eye.
"He has deliberately not chosen to use the many years he has devoted to causes that he values to enhance his public stature as an athlete and celebrity," attorney Allen Ruby wrote.

U.S. prosecutors have not yet submitted their sentencing recommendation for Bonds.
The Bonds prosecution stemmed from his testimony to a 2003 grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, or BALCO.....snip~

Lies to a grand Jury and wants probation. I didnt think they would give him time anyways. Think they will give him prison time? Or just the slap on the wrist?

I think he'll get just a slap on the wrist. He can afford the best lawyers and the government failed miserably in trying to prove their case. It was a huge waste of taxpayer money and resources.

Yeah.....plus they dropped 3 of the charges or lost on them.

Verdict is in.....

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Eight years of being investigated for steroid allegations ended for home run king Barry Bonds on Friday with a 30-day sentence to be served at home. No more—and maybe less.

Bonds was sentenced to two years of probation, 250 hours of community service, a $4,000 fine and 30 days of home confinement. It will take time to determine whether he serves any of it; his appellate specialist, Dennis Riordan, estimated it would take nearly a year and a half for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to rule.

Besides Bonds, 10 people were convicted of various charges in BALCO cases. Six of them, including track star Marion Jones, were ensnared for lying to grand jurors, federal investigators or the court. Others, including Bonds’ personal trainer Greg Anderson, pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges.....snip~

It was called.....slap on the wrist. Judge said she recieved all kinds of letters from charity groups etc etc. Sounds like she allowed that to influence her decison.

Wow, what a waste of time! That prosecutor has a rep for being an idiot and should have dropped this case a long time ago but made it personal...

I could understand this if Bonds was a drug kingpin but they went after him simply for use, correct? This is outrageous.

They did, well that and perjury I believe. The perjury was probably valid but the prosecutors really messed up the case. I'm not sure if it was legal - I don't think they had a warrant - and the guy was digging through trash from the lab. The judge threw it out I think. I'm basing this on memory so could be wrong...

So an 8 year pursuit for using steroids and lying about it.

Even worse is Congress taking the time on this on as if it was something of an importance to this country. Looks how much time they wasted on Bonds and Clemens. Anything to get out of work and doing what they are suppose to be there for. Try and get their greedy little grubby mitts into someone elses pockets to top it off. Wonder how many of our Good Politicians get Seasons Tickets from their Home team or state with regards to Professional Sports?

Agreed. This is the sort of thing that even they must know is a distraction. It's just so trivial. It's actually kind of insulting and let's you know what they really think about their constituents.
