I was heartened to see that Lincoln Chafee (the governor of Rhode Island) has, at last, done the honorable thing, and become a Democrat.
He had, at one time, been easily the leftmost member of the Republican Party in the US Senate.
Then, in 2007, the man did take the half-measure of leaving the Republican Party, and becoming an independent.
The fact that his sympathies (obviously) lie with the Democratic Party make this a good fit, in my opinion.
As Wikipedia notes:
According to Michelle R. Smith of the Associated Press, when asked whether he felt that his loss [in 2006, as a Republican] may have helped the country by switching control of power in Congress (toward moderate Democrats and away from conservative Republicans), he replied: "To be honest, yes."
