Two people, including a police officer, have been killed in a shooting on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Virginia Tech, the scene of a 2007 massacre in which 33 people died, university officials said.The shooting took place around noon, a university spokesman said, after a campus police offer made what she described as a routine traffic stop in a parking lot near McComas Hall. During the stop, the officer was shot and killed, said the spokesman, Mark Owczarski, Director of News and Information.Witnesses reported that the shooter fled on foot, heading toward a different parking lot, called the Cage, near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found, also dead. It was unclear whether that person had been shot.

I think just the cop. I haven't been following it though. I overheard this at work.

I heard them say Cop and another victim. That was the last I heard but that was earlier today.

The police officer, Deriek W. Crouse, 39, of Christiansburg, Va., was shot at close range by a man who had walked up to him as he was making a traffic stop in a campus parking lot, the police said.The killing of Officer Crouse, an Army veteran with five children, happened around noon and was captured on video by a camera that had been mounted on his car dashboard.Officials said they believed the gunman had acted alone in killing Officer Crouse.Capt. George Austin of the State Police said the police were still investigating whether the gunman knew Officer Crouse or the person in the car who was stopped. The police said they had been conducting tests of DNA at a facility in nearby Roanoke and interviewing witnesses to establish the identity of the gunman.

Five kids without a Dad now.

They think the shooter took his own life, but they still don't know. Scary to think he could still be on the loose. The shooter wasn't the guy in the car who was stopped. None of it makes any sense.

Oh wow. I was under the impression that the guy who got stopped did the shooting. Apparently the shooter came out of no where then? Somethign is fishy about that. Why would he target a random cop like that? I guess it's possible. There are loons out there.
