exclusive: Hidden camera catches wireless company employees passing out 'obama phones' to people who say they'll sell them for drugs, shoes, handbags and spending cash

the 'lifeline' free-cell-phone scheme cost $2.2 billion last year alone, all of it from fees added to the phone bills of paying customers
the biggest beneficiary other than low-income consumers is billionaire carlos slim helu, whose tracfone has collected $1.5 billion to date

one company told mailonline it will fire a salesperson who laughed uproariously when a woman said she would sell her phone to buy shoes
conservative firebrand james o'keefe sent undercover actors to pose as 'obama phone' seekers aiming to sell the goods; no one turned them down
legislation in congress would remove the cell phone component of the program, which launched in 1984 and covered only land lines until 2008

This is where I disagree with Republicans. Helping American citizens should be our high priority. How many of these really need this phone and don't abuse it? Many can't afford a monthly bill and I have no problem with them getting these phones to contact their love ones or have something in case of an emergency. We can send billions to other countries, take care of illegals (which we shouldn't) but slam our own. Americas are of all races.

The program was started before Obama. It's only been more abused since Obama... and used as promotional propaganda for his campaign.

Helping American citizens is high on the priority list of the Republicans, as shown by their issues with the enormous cost of O'Care (including loss of jobs), higher taxes, and free handouts to those not willing to work. Helping Americans is teaching them how to survive on their own... not to be dependent on the government.

People got along for centuries without a phone in their pockets.... and they are available for $10 a month... by the biggest carrier in the country. Verizon prepaid.

Instead of handing out free phones that can be sold for drugs or booze... why not make them invest their own $10. Maybe they would appreciate them more.

Of course... we all know whose $10 that really was....

Helping people sounds great but the reality of ALL of these programs is that they are rife with abuse. Fix that and then come back and ask for our support for these programs.

Of course you can't fix that. The reality is that there are a lot of cheaters out there. Much of the underclass engages in crime, a form of cheating, and welfare abuse. And who can blame them, they get away with it. Along with the one percent and the corporatists.

Helping American citizens is high on the priority list of the RepublicansThat's bull, it's like the democrats saying they care about the poor while giving illegals everything for votes. The first thing Pat our rep gov did was not try to bring jobs back to NC but cut unemployment benefits in half. Now if someone is laid off, instead of getting $580 a week it's $343 a week for 14 weeks. That's high-end jobs, in other words while looking they will need help and won't get it. They will use their savings and hope to get a job where $580 would have at least helped. This is the problem when people only vote for certain parties, they only look at the negative of the other without looking at theirs.
