Why is it that everything government touches seems to make life more complex for the average Joe and Jane?

I feel the pain. My clothes washer and dishwasher won’t get the stuff clean without a dash of TSP. I drilled out the jets on my mower carburetor to get it to work right. Toilets (if they are not the $800 Japanese models) require three flushes to get the job done. As a tech-savvy engineer I can work around the sabotage to my life but most people just sit there and suffer.
