View Full Version : The Bling Ring

Based on actual events wherein a group mostly of teenagers based in and around the affluent community of Calabasas, California burglarized the homes of several celebrities over a period believed to have been from around October 2008 through August 2009, stealing some $3 million worth of merchandise, The Bling Ring is a chilling film that captures the greedy, soulless consumer culture of wealth and fame that pervades the middle class youth of America for what it is. It captures the nauseating arrogance and entitlement mentality of the affluent. Most striking of all is, as the review below amusingly (and appropriately) puts it, "these kids' stunning lack of awareness that they were actually, like, committing crimes, and might actually, like, get caught, and go to, like, jail (which they eventually did)". That's seriously how it comes across on film: like these kids didn't even realize they were doing anything wrong. They refer to their burglaries as "going shopping".

This review is spot-on in my opinion, including in its criticism's of the films main shortcoming (too much neutrality!). (http://omg.yahoo.com/news/review-bling-ring-chilling-cold-too-165939487.html)

Here's a trailer/featurette of the movie:

They rob, break the law and behave badly for spot just as these rich kids did. Their play grounds are just a bit different.
