A team of entrepreneurs, tech innovators and archeologists have teamed up to create Architip (http://architip.mobi/)http://global.fncstatic.com/static/v/all/img/external-link.png, an augmented-reality program that brings Israel's ancient sites to life before your eyes -- on your smartphone screen, of course.
"People want to touch the past and feel the story when they visit ancient sites," Yaron Benvenisti, co-creator of the app, told FoxNews.com. Visiting ancient ruins with faded mosaics might spark his imagination, but many people struggle to stay interested when they do not have the actual image or structure in front of them.
Architip bridges the "imagination gap," he said.

Hold your smartphone in front of the Dome of the Rock and watch it transform into the Jewish holy site of the Second Temple, which was destroyed millennia ago. Or watch an old painting transform into the brightly-colored masterpiece it once was.

Rereading a book right now that offers a comparative study between ancient Israel and other ancient Near Eastern cultures in terms of theology, religious practice, ontology etc. Fascinating stuff. By understanding Israel's neighbors or the "cognitive environment" of the ancient Near East, as it's come to be called, you can get a better understanding of the OT.

Clever use of cellphone technology, GPS, compass, camera. Would really bring history to life for the traveler. Does anyone know would it work without traveling to Israel?

In the past when I have gone to historic sites in Europe I would pre download MP3 audio tours from the Net. That was always cool. I did it for Rome, Edinburgh, and a couple of other places.
