England captain John Terry will face a criminal charge of using racist language towards footballer Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game.

Mr Terry is alleged to have used racist language towards the 26-year-old Queens Park Rangers player during Chelsea's 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road on 23 October.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Mr Terry was accused of a racially aggravated public order offence (http://www.cps.gov.uk/news/press_statements/cps_advises_john_terry_charge/).
The 31-year-old vowed to fight the charge "tooth and nail".

Police questioned the Chelsea captain under caution in November and a file on the matter was sent to the CPS at the beginning of December.

'I am disappointed'

Alison Saunders, chief crown prosecutor for London, said: "I have today advised the Metropolitan Police that John Terry should be prosecuted for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments allegedly made during a football match between Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea on 23 October.

Isn't this crazy? I used to play sports and you would hear all kinds of things, guys trying to get into each other's heads and making cracks about moms, sisters, etc. I can't begin to fathom how a DA would decide to charge someone for it.

Yeah, the UK and Canada have some pretty frightening speech laws. A"racially aggravated public order offence (http://www.cps.gov.uk/news/press_statements/cps_advises_john_terry_charge/)"....

I suppose they are trying to make an example out of him. Lunacy.

BTW, I've been linking to the BBC a lot because I have an easier time cutting and pasting their articles. NY Times, Fox News and others always seem to mess up the formatting.

This kind of thing happens more than you might think. Check this out: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/2261307/Toddlers-who-dislike-spicy-food-racist-say-report.html

 That's ridiculous.

"It advises nursery teachers to be on the alert for childish abuse such as: "blackie", "Pakis", "those people" or "they smell"."

OK, I get the first two, but the last two are not racist!

I love spicy food. That should be enough to convince anyone that a love for spicy won't prevent racism.

No doubt there would be a lot of hand wringing and calls for national soul searching were such comments made today but the rest of the English speaking world accepts restrictions on speech and thought that would I thin repel most Americans.
