Today's Yahoo article says, "labor Union, Obamacare will "shatter" their health benefits. They are upset right now because many of their smaller businesses that are contracted with unions, mainly for health benefits are choosing to reduce staff and lower hours so their employees will have to obtain coverage through the exchange and qualify for subsidies. Businesses are not going to renew contracts with unions since they do not need them anymore due to the ACA exchange option.

Union leaders want to be able to have their members be allowed to qualify for subsidies. Unions are self insured employers and they are exempt from State regulations regarding health insurance. They are governed under the Erisa federal regulations and are exempt from the mandate regulations. You wonder why the unions spent tons of money getting democrats elected so they could make Obamacare a law knowing they would be exempt from it.

My guess would be that unions thought that more small businesses would join the union in response to Obamacare to avoid all those regulations. It seems everyone is in denial about the primary reason we are opposed to this mandate and that it is too expensive. Union coverage while generous with benefits is also very costly. On the other side of the coin, it creates a lot of cash generated by all those premiums collected on people that seldom use healthcare for the unions bank account.

Self-insured employers pay out all health claims themselves and only use a health insurance company to administer and adjust claims. They are in a sense an "insurance company" but without any of the regulations that go with it.

The Union leaders need to learn that their votes have consequences.

Wrong, Peter. I suspect the liberals will give the unions a pass on the "Cadillac" benefits. It's not their votes having consequences that matter. It's the tens of millions they spend buying politicians. That has consequence and one will be they won't get screwed by Obamacare. We have the Cornhusker Kickback and the Louisiana Purchase and now we'll have the Extortionist Exception.
