I'm NOT "with" PETA, on this ~
I would have picked up the DOG.
Unless the raccoon was rabid, it wouldn't have attacked a human;
it would have run away, sustaining NO injuries.
I say that, because I've seen what a raccoon can DO to other animals,
and if the dog only sustained "scratches?"
It was just trying to defend itself against a larger "enemy" that probably accosted IT.

I understand why the owner did it since he was probably scared for his dog's life, but yeah, pick up the dog next time. I think the throw was a little extreme but what can you do...

I think instinct took over, the guy just wanted to save his dog and I dont know if its worth grabbing the dog in that small space and taking a chance the coon turns on you and is rabid.
People in fla will jump in the water and attack a gator that has their dog.

Sounds like a good population control gimmick to me ...
Firstly :
WTF just opens the door, and lets their dog ROAM?
In a populated area, I take my dogs out, ON LEASHES,
as required by personal commitment, AND, in most instances, The LAW.
Secondly:
The 'coon was MUCH smaller than EITHER of it's "attackers."
Thirdly:
If the dog wasn't even BLEEDING,
why would you just assume that it's cries were death throes of some sort?
I feel so sorry for the wild animals,
whose habitats we've overrun to the point that they MUST seek subsistence amongst us ~
I have this HORROR of broken glass,
which,
to humans, is just a slight inconvenience,
but which, to a wild animal, actually COULD mean a protracted and painful death.
I protect the wild animals, FIRSTLY,
and my pets, as best I can. <sigh>

coons will kill a dog in a heartbeat...if they are in water..they can drown a dog....they will kill a dog much larger than they are...
