Officials with a Kentucky super PAC supporting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) blame a computer error for a $100,000 contribution that appeared more than a month after the donor died. Meanwhile, the Libertarian Party filed a federal lawsuit to lift limits on posthumous donations.

“This is pure free speech,” an attorney for the Libertarian party, Alan Gura told USA Today. “A dead person can’t corrupt someone.”

The lawsuit, currently pending before a federal appellate court, seeks to count a $217,000 donation by a deceased Tennessee man, Raymond Groves Burrington, as a lump sum donation for the party’s national committee instead of dispersing it in annual installments. Records show a trust in Burrington’s name has already given the party $153,200.

Federal regulations currently limit posthumous political donations to no more than $5,200 a year for a federal candidate during an election cycle and $32,400 for parties.

USA Today reported that 32 people listed as dead on federal campaign records are credited with more than $586,000 in contributions since Jan. 1, 2009, with just under 20 percent of that coming from the donation to McConnell’s group, Kentuckians for Strong Leadership, from Texas home developer Bob Perry, a longtime Republican supporter.

Dead people gave nearly $600K to campaigns since 2009

WASHINGTON — The dead can't vote, but they can give money to politicians.

Thirty-two people listed on federal campaign records as "deceased" have contributed more than $586,000 to congressional and presidential candidates and political parties since Jan. 1, 2009, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Federal Election Commission filings.

A trust handling Burrington's bequest already has distributed $153,200 to the Libertarian National Committee, making him the top deceased giver to any party or federal candidate since Jan. 1, 2009, and the party one of the top recipients of money of bequeathed donations, the analysis shows. (The Libertarians also received $10,000 from a deceased Texas man.)

In first place: the Democratic National Committee, which took in more than $245,000. Party officials declined comment.

It's only okay for dead people to be politically active if they're on the side of Democrats and voting for them, right Cigar?

First, New York was sending food stamps to dead people, the federal government sending social security checks to dead people and now we have dead people contributing to election campaigns. The dead have been active these days.

Hell, 20 years ago the dead were very active at election time in New Mexico. Had one walk in to my neighborhood polling place while I was standing there. Unfortunately for whoever it was who was trying to win a local race by pretending to be a dead voter, the gal at the registration table knew the guy was dead and told him she was calling the cops.

Never knew a dead guy could run so fast.

Hell dead people have been voting in Chicago and Cleveland for decades?

It is about time they started supporting a candidate!

This comedian thinks it is time we elected one!
