It is hard to describe the republican party today, its leaders are ideologues, talking heads, and a fringe made up of conspiratorial nutcases. There is no other way to describe them fairly. They persist in a litany of stupid remarks heard almost daily from elected officials which makes the 'witch candidate' and the 'VP candidate who read nothing' look normal if not regular. They get their soapbox on Fox where the last election proved clearly these people know nothing about America. And yet this is the base, a base heard online in a daily spewing of hatred for our democratically elected president. Just yesterday a former chairman of the republican party wondered why these stupid remarks persist and questioned why the few sane republicans don't speak up. I guess when the hardcore base shouts you down, there is no reason to even try to repair the GOP. Only the voters can repair the party but it seems gerrymandering has created a unsolvable problem when the candidates and elected republicans are of the same timber as the crazies.

Wow, just WOW. Every single piece of liberal propaganda bullshit in just three posts. This has got to be a record.

It would have been in one post had the board allowed it. If there is a single item that is not true please counter it. Others have tried, none have succeeded - although I may need to temper a comment here or there. lol

"Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home -but not for housing. They are strong for labor - but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights. They favor minimum wage - the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all - but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine - for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing - but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing - so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it." Harry S. Truman

Continued below

Each of your statements is not proof, just speculation.

Let's just look at the last statement above. Who wanted the whitewater investigation to happen?

Bill Clinton did. He wanted a special council appointed. Who knew most about Whitewater. Was it Bill or Hillary?
Much is made of the investigation which given there was a Democrat president as well as I believe the Senate belonged to democrats, over what happened. At no time during all of that did republicans clamor for any of it to happen. Yes, democrats enjoy their myth it was all the fault of republicans, but facts are sweet things to the informed and sour to the myth makers.

Speaking of deregulation, I support deregulation but the big hitters of deregulation were Carter and some done by Clinton, eg., Glass Steagal was killed by Clinton.

Democrats refused to play a positive role so the housing problem escalated until as they had to have hoped, it all fell down. Witness the hearings in the Congress saying that FNMA and Freddie was doing wonderful things and were not in trouble. They were the first to fail. Barney Frank and Chris Dodd led the parade to the economic downfall.

By the way, how did you forget the Texas court case that forced banks to lend to those who could not afford to own homes?

midcan5. You asked for one.

Coolidge administration incompetent while speculation takes hold of nation

That is an opinion and likely isn't true. The Coolidge administration believed that government micromanaging of the economy creates more problems than it solves. You can disagree. But you can't call it incompetence.

What do I win?

@midcan5 (http://thepoliticalforums.com/member.php?u=765). You asked for one.

That is an opinion and likely isn't true. The Coolidge administration believed that government micromanaging of the economy creates more problems than it solves. You can disagree. But you can't call it incompetence.

What do I win?

You win a kudo for reading and thinking about it, a rarity today. I will (have to research a bit more) change that word to ineffective or maybe distracted, as problems don't materialize overnight. For instance, Reagan Clinton and Bush Jr were responsible for the great recession. Add humans and a financial system that rewards the money changers for doing nothing more than moving money around and you have the same ingredients Coolidge faced but seemed unaware of.

One of the problems with assigning blame or credit is our present vantage point, we can assume Coolidge thought his inaction the right approach, economics is hardly science as the 2007 crash demonstrated. Hoover too was a bright man but his approach didn't work. The information for why 2007 happened was available, but few even commented on it so long as the bubble continued. A few links to elucidate below.

http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/Summary.htm
http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/connections_n2/great_depression.html

"Although the public liked and admired Calvin Coolidge during his tenure, the Great Depression that began in 1929 seriously eroded his reputation and changed public opinion about his policies. Many linked the nation's economic collapse to Coolidge's policy decisions. His failure to aid the depressed agricultural sector seems shortsighted, as nearly five thousand rural banks in the Midwest and South shut their doors in bankruptcy while many thousands of farmers lost their lands. His tax cuts contributed to an uneven distribution of wealth and the overproduction of goods. Many Americans were deeply in debt for having purchased consumer goods on easy installment credit terms."

You can just change the word to "neglected." It is loaded towards those who believe the government can manage the economy, but it is accurate that the laissez faire Coolidge administration "neglected" the economy, but for reasons they believed in.

Also, the crash of 1929 was only a stock market correction that went to recession levels. There was no real depression until closer to the end of Hoover's administration. And it was caused by government meddling to "fix" the market.
