The Ottoman victory today led to the partition of Hungary between the Hapsburgs and the Ottoman Empire for hundreds of years. The young King Louis II (an ethnic Pole if I'm not mistaken) confronted the Ottomans with an inferior force but not only because of his brashness. It was also because of the decentralzation of the kingdom. Some nobles simply took their time responding to the king's call to arms. Instead of waiting for the reinforcements expected in a few days the king marched toward the Ottomans.

I've always been fascinated by how some events, largely unknown in the west if one is not a student of history, loom so large in the national consciousness of other peoples. The Hungarian memory of Mohacs is a great example and Kosovo in the Serb consciousness is another.

I picked up a specialty book on the medieval military history of Eastern Europe. I love the Ottoman period. The chapter on John Hunyadi was great.
