Interesting interactive tool for some reason mislabeled downsizing the Federal Government given it just ain't happening. Sorry for the size of the graphic, no, not really, sorrier for the size of the federal government!

Go to http://www.downsizinggovernment.org/charts.php and play around with it, you can select on the left various government departments and agencies, compare and contrast spending since the 70s.

Look closely and you'll see the trend down between 2009 and present....

I see a spike up and then a return to the previous trend upward.

Tapering isn't considered a downward trend.

To a liberal, increasing spending by $500 B instead of by $600 B is considered a "spending cut".

There only downward movement in government spending was briefly in Q4 of 2011 and Q1 of 2012. Other than that, the Government just decided not to be fiscally reckless fast enough.

That first chart shows about the same curve as CATO's just scaled differently and stretched over a longer period of time. Same uptick, downtick, resumption of increasing spending. All the efforts of government amounting to no real change at all.
