What made America exceptional was its federalism, limited government, and equal opportunity for those who applied themselves....

Read Dyson's Turing's Cathedral for the story behind the privately funded gathering of scientists responsible for the foundations of the space program.

The Apollo program was one of the only government programs to pay for itself and add to the economy.

Ideally, I would have liked to see a Constitutional Amendment placing space exploration in Art 1 Sec 8.

sometimes a program provides benefits that are beyond economic.

A successful government program is not American exceptionalism.

I think it is clear that what made America a significant nation was production.

Production.

It was Americas manufacturing power that allowed the US to take advantage of WW2 and become superpower.

Production. America has no production today. America is the worlds banker, admin and judge but America no longer works. Nobody wants shovel ready jobs in America. Americans are too exceptional for that kind of work.

And the stupidest thing is that Americas most important trading partner China is the nation America will face in the next WW. Hitler made sure Germany stopped trading with the allies long before WW2. It is not smart to rely on your enemy for anything, expecially not manufacturing. The US needs autarky.

America worked much better as somewhat of an isolationist nation. Isolationism is real nationalism. Real patriotism.

edit- Russia beat you in the 'space race' btw. America was 'exceptional' before WW2. America was 'exceptional' before taking the Reserve Status and becoming superpower.

The only thing Russia ever beat us at was being insane, and since we're discussing history here in the history room:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/2367681.stm

An astonished world witnessed the launch of Sputnik 2 weighing 113 kg (250 lbs) and carrying the first living thing to go into orbit - the dog Laika. The animal had been a stray wandering the streets of Moscow when she was captured and prepared for a space mission.
Shortly after launch the Soviets said that Laika was not destined to return alive and would die in space. The statement caused outrage to many observers.

Where we are exceptional the Russians are exceptionally insane.

It is quite possible that if Hitler didn't ration his people to death in part by stopping trade before the war he would have won the war.

This will rustle some jimmies, but America is comprised of corrupt, bought politicians voted in by a stupid, uneducated public.

The truth hurts.

America's gift to the world was federalism. We have largely abandoned it. Canada does it better than we do now.

We've become quite unexceptional in that regard.

Not really when the collapse comes we will all fall. The difference in my opinion is that we have Jesus to help most of us and understand what is happening. Non-religion won't get this.

No. Our prior exceptionalism has allowed the unexceptional, the mundane and the underperforming to thrive and water down what was once a wellspring of excellence.

I'm sure you're not sharp enough to realize the racially adverse understatement that you made. Even if you thought about it.

Is there anything exceptional of being a minority, and or do minorities feel that America is exceptional in any way despite their constant need to bring America to its knees?
