View Full Version : Here Is What Will Happen If Congress DOESN'T Get Its Act Together BY MONDAY

If Congress fails to pass a continuing resolution in six days, the federal government will come to a standstill, shuttering “non-essential” services and operations that are deemed unnecessary for the safety of human life and national security. So while air traffic controllers will keep the planes in the sky, seniors will receive their Medicare and Social Security checks and the unemployed will continue to see benefits, other services will begin to dry up the longer the shutdown continues. Services that are not subject to yearly appropriations — so-called mandatory spending — will continue functioning (http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/09/23/shutdown-vs-default-the-relative-impact/?_r=1&) and self-funding agencies like the Postal Services could still deliver mail.

But close to a million federal workers performing tasks that are deemed non-essential could be furloughed, leading to delays and shutdowns in the following services:

http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/110302_government_shutdown_poll_ap_605-e1380033417792-300x200.jpg

FINANCIAL SERVICES. The Small Business Administration will stop making loans (http://money.cnn.com/2011/04/04/news/economy/shutdown_faq/index.htm), federal home loan guarantees will likely go on hold, and students applying for financial aid could also see delays and backlogs in applications.

ARMED FORCES. U.S. troops serving at home and abroad could stop receiving paychecks (http://edition.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/04/04/government.shutdown.military/index.html?iref=allsearch) if the shutdown continues for an extended period and changes of station would also be delayed and facility and weapons maintenance would be suspended. Families back home would also be impacted.

HEALTH CARE. The National Institutes of Health will stop accepting new patients (http://money.cnn.com/2011/04/04/news/economy/shutdown_faq/index.htm)and delay or stop clinical trials. Medicare and the Veterans administration will continue paying out benefits, but new filers could face delays and doctors and hospitals may also have to wait for reimbursements.
Do you SEE that Ms Amazon? ... that's the Difference between Mandatory and Discretionary Funds

PUBLIC SAFETY. The Environmental Protection Agency would stop reviewing environmental impact statements and food inspectors would stop conducting workplace inspections unless there is an imminent danger. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms could stop processing applications for permits. (http://edition.cnn.com/2013/09/23/politics/government-shutdown-daily-life/)

SECURITY AND TRAVEL. The Department of Homeland Security would suspend the E-Verify program, which helps businesses determine the eligibility of employees, creating hiring delays. The State Department will also likely halt new passport and visa applications.

PARKS AND RECREATION. The National Park Service sites and the Smithsonian Institution will be shutdown. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/08/federal-shutdown-effects_n_846734.html) During the 1990s, 368 sites closed down and approximately 7 million visitors denied entry (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/09/24/everything-you-need-to-know-about-a-government-shutdown/).

All this will come at a price. The last two shutdowns (http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/RL34680.pdf) during the Clinton era — one lasted six days in 1995 and another stretched 21 days at the end of 1995 and beginning of 1996 — cost the country 0.5 percentage points of gross domestic product (GDP) growth and more than $2 billion (http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/09/23/2666641/how-much-would-a-government-shutdown-cost-in-lost-economic-growth/)(in today’s dollars) in unnecessary expenses — as government employees abandoned their jobs to prepare for the shutdown. Economists estimate that were a short-term shutdown to occur next month, it “would do significant economic damage, reducing real GDP by 1.4 percentage points.” A two-month shutdown could “precipitate another recession.” (http://money.cnn.com/2013/09/18/news/economy/congress-shutdown-economy/index.html?iid=EL)

The House passed a continuing resolution that funds the government. It declined to appropriate further funds for Obamacare as is its Constitutional right to do so, since it is the appropriating body under that charter.

What you meant to say is the Senate and the White House.

Carry on. That is your often repeated civics lesson for today. I've no doubt that it will have to be repeated daily for you for the foreseeable future.

So many people wouldn't be dependent on the government if we didn't inflate our currency with the Fed and fractional reserve banking, and if had a decent economy where small business weren't destroyed via the tax code whereas the Walmarts of the world thrive and get loopholes and subsidized.

Point being, government has created this monster in the first place.

Brilliant … you’ll make a great Republican Politician

It’s not like you have Job in (Financial Services or a Military Troop or Health Care or Public Safety or Security & Travel or Parks & Recreation)
... and need to pay the Mortgage.

So Fuck It ... you're not affected.

Oh bother. Don't be a nancy about a temporary shut down where the elderly are still taken care of and you still get your mail.

If I were you I'd appreciate the shutdown because it would mean no nonviolent drug offenders are kidnapped by your FBI and no one is felt up by DHS agents.

They will get their pay cheques late and I'm almost certain the military will be happy to have the days off.

They've said on the news already that when the government starts back up they will receive their pay for that period. Meaning they got days off.

Ask me if I want days off.

I'm not blaming them, you gotta do what you have to in order to survive and thrive. The blame lies on the feet of the politicians and their constituents that made it be so that people need the government to survive.

You yanks are so inept, it would actually be funny if you were given the unfortunate opportunity of determining the fate of the country. As I have said before, all but essential services would stop functioning in the event the Government were to shut down.

This includes (but is not limited to) police departments, fire departments, armed forces, post office, air traffic, corrections, utilities and National Wildlife Services.

The next time you sashay your cute little ass (affectionately saying) across the ocean to us poor unfortunate yanks ... your pilot depends of several things ...

ALL Government Controlled.

Satellite ... that ain't British owned hardware sport.
Clearance Control ... I wouldn't try fling into US Airspace without it.
Ground Control ... good luck fighting your way through the maze of Vertical and horizontal Airspace without them.
Tower Control ... don't miss that postage-stamp size landing strip without them, or the traffic on the Runways.

Just a few Government Employees who you don't want thinking about their next pay-check
