Mark Udall and a bipartisan coalition of U.S. senators, including Ron
Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), unveiled wide-ranging legislation
to reform domestic surveillance laws and the secret Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Court. Among many actions, this bill would end the bulk
collection of phone records of law-abiding Americans, close the
"back-door searches" loophole that allows the government to search for
Americans' communications without a warrant and create an independent
constitutional advocate to argue significant cases before the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Court.

I like especially the last part: "create an independent
constitutional advocate to argue significant cases before the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Court."
I would argue this position needs to be outside the government, otherwise it's just more of the same fox guarding the chicken coop. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I agree. It's a start, but I'd just abolish the NSA and CIA. Any agencies who have violated their charter and performed illegal actions should be shut down.
I'm not a "greater good" person when it comes to government.

One small step at a time, but I agree.
There is no such thing as greater good, not that can be designed at least, perhaps the social order that emerges from individual interactions and exchanges.

Udall is growing on me more and more. I never really gave him that much thought, because he seemed like a low-tier pol, but now that I've actually been looking into him, he seems to be in the same class as Wyden, Paul, Cruz, Lee, and Amash.
