View Full Version : Republicans chaned House rule to force shutdown?

Less than two hours before shutting down the government, House Republicans created a special rule to prevent Democrats from reopening the government (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/the-house-gop-s-little-rule-change-that-guaranteed-a-shutdown). The House’s normal rules provide that “[w]hen the stage of disagreement has been reached on a bill or resolution with House or Senate amendments, a motion to dispose of any amendment shall be privileged” — a provision that House Democrats believe would have enabled any member of the House to force a vote on a bill to fund the government that had already passed the Senate. Yet, as Dylan Scott reports, the Republican caucus thwarted the maneuver by enacting a special rule preventing this vote from taking place.
Under this special rule, such an attempt to fund the government “may be offered only by the majority Leader or his designee.” Thus, with a shutdown looming, the power to allow a vote that would likely have prevented the government from closing (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/01/house-republicans-clean-cr_n_4024755.html?1380659209) was left in Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (R-VA) hands. Cantor, of course, chose not to exercise that power.

Well Obama changes the Constitution to kill a 16 year old American citizen and our Congress changes the rules to violate our 4th amendment rights, so what's the big difference?

Rules are only important, it seems, when its "your" side who wants them to be obeyed, but when we want the 4th amendment to be obeyed it's like crickets are chirping.

And let's not forget how they want to do away with the 2nd amendment and my right to bear arms.

I am reminded of Archimedes the Owl on Sword in the Stone.

"She only wants rules so she can break 'em!"

I have no problem with the shut down in order to push the defunding of Obamacare. I don't think the stunt will work, but TBH I'm surprised the GOP has stuck it out this long so far.

I'm curious to see how this all plays out, but I don't have high hopes for any dramatic changes in the long run.

According to this GOPer, defunding it is now off the table.

ThinkProgress is so full of shit. I do like how they pretend the House shut down the government. President Obama and the Senate shut down the government and since kidnapping elderly women didn't go over as well as they planned they're desperate for scapegoats now.

But, we've heard from the socialists all along that they not only don't need a budget they don't need approval from anyone to borrow and spend until they destroy the country.

Now that defunding Obamacare is off the table, what is the actual point of the GOP hissyfit?

Stop crying about the shutdown, marie. Crying doesn't make anything better. Haven't you Liberals learned that yet?

now it's about them trying not to look like abject failures

they did succeed in being so insane that they made the ACA more popular.

kind of the most impressive political failure i've ever seen

So you don't know, either.

So it does not bother you that this President is going to run up more debt that all other Presidents Combined?

It doesn't bother you that Obamacare is a totally mess and was not ready to be launched and they did it anyway, and they are forcing the people to have insurance, but not forcing companies to provide it?

It does not bother you that we have not had a national budget in 4 years, and they really don't intend to pass one this year either?

What happens when we run out of money?
