Republican support in 'jaw-dropping' free fall

Professional pollsters for major news organizations are notoriously cautious people who avoid hyperbole. So when Democratic pollster Peter Hart and Republican Bill McInturff conducted the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll and described the results as "jaw-dropping," it's worth appreciating why.

http://m.static.newsvine.com/servista/imagesizer?file=steve-benen55B79CD8-674C-35B3-C7F4-4EC2695A37BD.jpg

Let's put it this way: if this poll were a campfire story, it'd leave Republicans shaking uncontrollably in their sleeping bags. The GOP wasn't in especially good shape before, but the shutdown crisis and the threats to crash the economy on purpose have been an unmitigated disaster for the party, causing the sort of collapse in public support pollsters simply don't see very often.

What's the good news for Republicans in the poll? There is no good news.

* Approval ratings: While President Obama's approval rating improved after GOP lawmakers shut down the government, Republican support has collapsed. In the new poll, 70% of Americans disapprove of the way in which GOP lawmakers are doing their jobs. Republicans have reached a level of unpopularity unseen in the history of the poll.

* Shutdown: Asked who bears responsibility for the shutdown, a 53% majority blame congressional Republicans. Less than a third (31%) blame the president.

* "Obamacare": Despite the difficulties the Affordable Care Act has encountered since the open-enrollment period began, support for the law has increased.

* Generic ballot: Democrats enjoy an eight-point advantage in the congressional midterm elections (47% to 39%), as compared to a three-point advantage last month (46% to 43%).

* Government activism: By a 52% to 44% margin, Americans believe the government should do more, not less, to solve problems. In June, the results were evenly split.

* Patriotism: A 70% majority believe congressional Republicans are "putting their own political agenda ahead of what is good for the country."

Republican pollster Bill McInturff added, "These numbers lead to one inescapable conclusion: The Republicans are not tone deaf; they are stone deaf."

Gallup: Cruz’s favorability rating plunges

Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) favorability rating has collapsed as the public has become more familiar with him, according to a Gallup survey released on Thursday.

The survey found that 26 percent have a favorable view of the Texas Republican, against 36 percent unfavorable. That makes 62 percent of the public that has an opinion on Cruz, up from 42 percent in June, when 24 percent had a favorable view of him against 18 percent unfavorable – a 16-point negative swing.

The Gallup poll comes on the heels of a Brigham Young University survey that found Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) losing favor in his home state. Lee has seen a 20-point negative swing in his favorability rating from the same poll in June, and now sits at 40 percent favorable and 51 percent unfavorable in Utah.

Lee and Cruz led the charge in provoking a government shutdown over the funding of ObamaCare. Both pushed House Republicans to withhold all government appropriations in an attempt to defund the president’s signature legislative achievement.

If anyone is feeling the pain of the Government Shutdown, it's because government growing instead of shutting down. Never knew that you needed Government agents to keep people from their homes and memorials during a government shutdown.

Aside from that, no one really cares about the Shutdown. The market doesn't care, the people don't care, creditors don't care. No one cares.

The Sky was to fall in the sequester, and it stimulated the economy and most people don't even know what happened.

This shut down would likely have met the same fate if the President did not take action to inflict pain on the people

What does this has to do with the statement that the Government Shutdown has reached $4 Billion dollars as of today?

Every 4 years there is a Presidential Election; every 4 years there's a Presidential Winner and Loser.

Grow-up and deal with it and stop acting like cry babies.

Do you admit that putting someone out of work and forcing them to file for unemployment doesn't save the Government money, but rather removes consumers from the market?

It does for the private sector, not the public sector.

Try again.

Running against Al Sharpton and Nancy Pelosi. But, it would be interesting to have a conservative running instead of another liberal lite.

I think I'll become a Republican again just so I can vote for them in the primaries.

That sounds like a liberal but most pretend to be honest and ethical. They aren't but they don't come right out and say they're scum. Congratulations.

Maybe if the cons would put up a credible candidate life would be different. But no, they can only put up nutters and Romney.

Two non-veterans co-opting the million veteran march..... one couldn't even finish their term of SERVICE as governor of their state. Priceless.

.....and what's with the confederate flag? I though our troops swore alligence to the USA not the CSA.

Shameful display.

Well I admit they should have raped a few girls and shit all over the park like the Occupy wall street crowd, but I think I will support them taking it to the bamster anyway!

Actually we swear an oath to the protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against enemies foreign and domestic. Our government is currently the biggest enemy of the Constitution, so technically us not doing anything is sorta breaking our vows, anyhow.

Thank You, Nic is one that feels the people can't stand up to the Government because the military has to do what the President says.

I keep telling these liberals that it is the constitution first!

Yep and the constitution gave the power of the purse to the House way over 200 years ago.

Sorry that Constitution thing is getting in the way of your take over again! but the Bamster is going to give up something?

And we elect our congress men and women every 2 years, and in 2010 the people decided that Obama and the democrats were not responsible enough to have control of the money.

Maybe you should find a country with a dictator. here we are a republic?

I talked to few Republican friends and they said they think the flag raising yesterday may be the final straw for a lot of them. They were embarrassed to see that, but even more ashamed at what was said afterwards.

This went beyond politics, to walk a confederate flag outside the White House in front of the First Black Family was below racism, it was cowardliness.

Personally, I would be more impress if they did that on 51st street and King Drive in Chicago, but we all know bedsheets bandits don't have the ball to do something like that without police protection.

You are safe. I have no respect for these yellow Rednecks who have no problems with the guillotine-fodder who got their Daddies to get them out of having to fight in Vietnam, which of course includes the Virginia Tech preppies who definitely would do the same thing today. They are sissy scab peasants who should go back to the crumbling castles of Europe where they belong. And their big hero, Teddy "I Wasn't Ready" Nugent went to psychotic coprophiliac extremes to get out of it and let a real American fight in his place. Why didn't the Induction Center arrest him for obvious draftdodging and send him to prison?

The worst president we have had in our lifetime was baby bush. But let me know what other president bled more than 800,000 jobs a month.

Your post is is why you will keep losing. You haven't a clue about the rational world because you're wrapped up in the bubble where Palin isn't a blithering idiot.

Of course, just losing jobs in one month is rather meaningless. Which president has kept the economy from a meaningful growth for the longest time? You really have two choices: FDR and BO.
