(CNN) -- I'm a sucker for all of those man-on-the-street interviews that late-night shows do to reveal just how dumb Americans are.
It's fun to laugh at the people who struggle with simple math problems or are unable to find any country we're at war with on a map.
More than a few even get tripped up trying to name the branches of government.

It's all fun and games until you remember that elections have consequences, and that many of those people who said they could name the president -- but not the commander in chief -- will soon be standing in a voting booth, armed with a ballot.

If you think government dysfunction is the country's No. 1 problem -- and according to a recent Gallup poll, a third of the nation does -- then maybe we should take those hilarious late-night interviews a little more seriously.

Policymakers and politicians who wring their hands about the mediocre (http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/us-students-continue-to-trail-asian-students-in-math-reading-science/2012/12/10/4c95be68-40b9-11e2-ae43-cf491b837f7b_story.html) performance of U.S. students on international math and reading tests have another worry: The nation’s grown-ups aren’t doing much better.
A first-ever comparison of adults in the United States and those in other democracies found that Americans were below average when it comes to skills needed to compete in the global economy.
The survey, released Tuesday (http://www.oecd.org/site/piaac/), measured the literacy, math and computer skills of about 5,000 U.S. adults between ages 16 and 65, and compared them with similar samples of adults from 21 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The Americans are “decidedly weaker in numeracy and problem-solving skills than in literacy, and average U.S. scores for all three are below the international average and far behind the scores of top performers like Japan or Finland,” said Jack Buckley, commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, the data collection arm of the U.S. Department of Education.

When it comes to literacy, adults in the U.S. trailed those in 12 countries and only outperformed adults in five others. The top five countries in literacy were Japan, Finland, the Netherlands, Australia and Sweden.

Go Australia! I told ya we were smarter but just more passive. Australians dont kill pommies over tea. We dont like em either but god, couldnt you guys have worked out your problems over a nice cup of tea? Instead of dumping it in the ocean and killing a bunch of people. WTF? Anyway, back to how stupid you are...

U.S. adults did worse in mathematics, where they trailed 18 countries and beat just two — Italy and Spain.

The good news is this, you can lay off your stupid children. It isnt their fault. They are just from a very weak gene pool. It isnt their fault it is yours.

And LZ makes a great point about how the American public are not only responsible for their domestic politics but also for international politics. Americans do not know what foreign policy is and they dont want to. Egocentric, selfish people that are arrogant for no reason at all. And you claim to be exceptional?

In 2007, during the immigration debate, Sen. Harry Reid (http://books.google.com/books?id=FfliNO80U8MC&pg=PP112&lpg=PP112&dq=Congressional+Record+AND+Dr.+Seuss+-Cruz&source=bl&ots=DDz9slHDLZ&sig=DumI78K-gykSyPLRz-gwnAAOcBA&hl=en&sa=X&ei=HPhCUsGMKaHC4AOLsYCABQ&ved=0CDgQ6AEwAjgK#v=onepage&q=Congressional Record AND Dr. Seuss -Cruz&f=false) read a piece from the New York Times that contained quotes from "The Cat in the Hat."
"And this mess is so big. And this mess is so deep and so tall, we can not pick it up. There is no way at all!"
Reid then went on to say: "Mr. President, some would say that is what we have in the Senate today -- a big mess. But if you go back and read Dr. Seuss, the cat manages to clean up the mess."
I used to think politicians such as Cruz and Reid quoted from children's books as a way to insult the intelligence of their political foes. Now I'm wondering if it's because they're afraid using big words would lose the rest of us.

BURN!

Hey elites. Like I said, come to Australia. We let America explode and then buy it up for cents on the dollar. I hope you are all quietly moving your wealth out of harms way.

Fine. Throw the US public to the lions. Thatl work. And we all know they deserve it. Most of them still have no idea what a Reserve Status is.

We can make our own Judgement Day.

Leave the lost causes to die.

Come on over down under. Leave the idiocracy behind. Its a lost cause. Americans are too far gone. You know it.

We can create an economy based on the National Socialist Government of Germany here in Australia. That will work perfectly alongside the State Capitalism of the CPC.

We have, have to, work with China.

This is what you have always wanted...

Lets do it.

Digital money. No more criminals. We control it all. Everything. The whole world. We can share it with the CPC and Russia. The world is big enough, especially after you cut the vile, new money fat. Leave them in America.

Cmon!

Someone must pay!

Americans still dont care. They will argue against a global min wage. I mean jesus fucking christ. Everything is a stupid game to them. Lets make them third world and teach them how exceptional they really are. Cmon!

Yep. I just called your children stupid. Im just telling the truth. Dont shoot the messenger. Sounds like you are dumber than they are though.

Maybe if you stop helping them with their homework the numbers will improve?

Jim Jeffries thinks your children are stupid too.

I'm not really surprised about the rankings for skills, but I think it's pretty silly to say that all Americans are dumb or to say that as a group they lack intelligence when only certain skills/abilities were measured. Most innovation and research comes out of the United States. Their technological advances are unrivaled and lucrative, which would also apply to many/most other fields like medicine and general hard science. Even advances in social sciences would be unparalleled. The Fortune 500 list is dominated by the United States and making money (lots of it) - and that's not easy and involves a lot of intelligence and innovation. The OECD survey only outlines briefly how they chose participants and I can find very little information on the website relating to the methodology.

Underestimating the United States and the citizens isn't very smart.
