View Full Version : Texas Football team wins 91 to 0, accused of bullying

A Texas high school football team beat its opponent 91 to zip. As a result one parent has accused the coach of bullying. Other parents wanted the winning team to back off and let the other team score a few goals. This is the same attitude I heard during the 1st Iraq war when we were killing Saddam's elite Republican Guard by the thousands. We were bullies according to many in the liberal press.
This is the ultimate liberal philosophy. You can be ok but you can't be too good. Too good is discriminatory. This ideology is prevalent not only in sports but also, and much more so, in business. Look at the attitudes regarding Walmart, one of the most successful retailers of all times.

Ok so let me get this straight ... because we need to know exactly where you stand.
Are you saying the Winning Team was Superior, the Losing Team was inferior and they should except their Ass-Kicking like Men and go back and practice and get better.
I'm with you, they shouldn't cry like a bunch of Fucking Babies just because they weren't good enough to Win.

When I was in school and a team was obviously superior to the opponent the coach would, when the win was in the bag, play the second-string, third-string, and so forth. I never saw one get to the point of suiting up volunteers from the stands but it could have happened.
There was a concept down south of behavior that was tacky. Running the score up like that was tacky. But, there have been an awful lot of carpetbaggers moving south and, worse, refugees from California.

Apparently this team did just that, cleaned off the bench, didn't call time outs, played conservatively and still racked up the points.
The losing team apparently has a history of really lousy performance. Maybe this is more of a local league problem than anything.

If you read the article you will see that is exactly what the coach did. He was down to playing his JV team.

You are too funny. And pointless to I might add. The comparison is not in the game being played but in the reaction to the results of that game. For the comparison to hold up it would need be whether or not the two teams should have even played against each other, not what the outcome would be in the event of such a match up. The issue of "senseless death" is not the issue in this argument and anyone who wants to make is so is guilty of deflection.

Guys seriously it was one parent that said it was bullying. Making this a "liberal" thing is just stupid i'm sorry. It was a crappy thing to do by running up the score like that but one claim by one upset parent is not something that defines an entire political and/or social leaning.
FYI 91-0 is ridiculous. I'm not a sports expert or a football expert by any stretch of the imagination but I think the winning coach should have substituted as many of his starting players as possible and just run basic plays once he realized the game was well over. If I were a player on that winning team I think I would have been just as embarrassed as the losing team, but that's just me.

Apparently you did not read the accompanying link. It was one parent to filed a formal complaint but it was several who were complaining. Also, if you read beyond the first sentence you would have seen the coach used everyone on the bench, not just his best players.
And based on your post it is a liberal thing. Its the idea that you shouldn't be "too good" or "too much better".

It is my understanding that the coach of the winning team played his bench-warmers for the entire second half, and they still were far superior to the opposing team's starters.
One might surely be permitted to wonder: What, exactly, is wanted by those who are now leveling the charge of "bullying"?
Would they advocate that those who seldom get a chance to play should intentionally drop passes, run backwards--or what, exactly?

Several people does not equal an entire ideology either. Generalizations based on a handful of people gets old.
Nobody is saying that you shouldn't be too good at something performance based, but at some point you can voluntarily choose to be a good person and take a step back out of sportsmanship. It's like knowing that you easily can and are about to win a race but instead you take 7th place because you dropped back to finish the race with a friend or teammate. You don't always have to prove superiority in a public way is what I am saying.

In HS baseball, there is the mercy rule. Mostly because there is no clock, and the game could go on forever.... but with HS age players the emphasis is on safety. Football is beginning to catch on to this as well. Nothing is gained by needlessly continuing play, running up the score and putting kids at risk for no reason.
A good pounding builds character, but piling on just teaches bad sportsmanship.

Why does everyone blame the winning coach for this. Would not the losing coach had the opportunity to say, Hey, we need to stop this. Did not the losing coach allow this to continue as well? Oh wait, my bad. Losing is ok, winning is bad and anyone who wins must have used poor sportmanship or was a bully.

I can see why others have put you on ignore. I may very well do the same. If you can see a similarity between a football game and an election and the response of the opposing party then you really don't have much to add to any discussion I might be interested in. I suppose you told the Democrats who bitched and moaned for 8 years over GWB they should "get over it". Right, I believe that.
Be of good cheer.

Just like Obamalini still has troops in Afghanistan but somehow bears no responsibility for that.
Johnson escalated the war by using the trumped up Maddox and Turner Joy Gulf of Tonkin incident. That was about as phony as the WMD's. Nixon was at least trying to end the war and the additional 22,000 were not killed in Laos and Cambodia but mostly in Vietnam, in the war that Johnson had created.

2 things
(1) The truth does not offend me but the response to the election has absolutely nothing in common with the response to this football game. You can twist it if you will but that won't change the real truth.
(2) What does the KKK have to do with this football game? Was the winning team all Klan members?

I didn't "admit" anything. No one with an ounce of intelligence would even consider saying they were all killed between 1961 and 1968 when Nixon took office. However, that does not change the fact that Johnson could have withdrawn our support when Kennedy was murdered, which Kennedy had suggested he might do. Instead he used the Tonkin Gulf Incident to increase our involvement. Did you expect Nixon to withdraw all the troops in January 1969 as part of his inauguration ceremony?

No i'm not saying that you should give someone the opportunity to beat you, the competition in itself is the opportunity, but what I am saying is that when you've already won then then that's it, you've won, and so there is no reason to win excessively at the expense of sportsmanship. Just scale it back at that point to a level that is comfortable for you and not insulting towards your competition. I am also not saying that someone should not be "too good" at something I am saying that being good at something does not mean publicly embarrassing your competition.
FYI just for clarity I do not think that this was an example of bullying. I think that the coaches for the losing team should have prepared their team better and the coaches for the winning team should have come up with other ways to control their players as the game became obviously out of hand.

As I have noted previously, the coach of the winning team did not play his starters during the second half. What do you believe he should have done? Do you suppose he should have asked his second- and third-string players to just not try--even though this presented a rare opportunity for them to play?
