Dept. Store Barneys Calls Police on Black Teen for Buying Expensive Belt.

Trayon Christian, 19, told the Daily News he filed a lawsuit after he was targeted by staffers at Barneys’ Madison Ave. flagship store and detained by police because they didn’t believe a young black man could possibly afford to buy such an expensive belt.

The fashion-forward teen, who lives with his mom in Corona, Queens, is studying engineering at the New York City College of Technology, where he had a work-study job.

It was a quick trip. I gave them my debit card, I signed my name,” he said.

According to his lawsuit, the clerk asked Christian to show his ID, which he did.

“I showed my state ID,” he told The News.

The clerk didn’t react as he signed for his purchase and left, he said.

But he got no more than a block from the store when two undercover NYPD detectives stopped him near E. 60th St., the lawsuit said.

“They said my card wasn’t real, it was fake. They said someone at Barneys called to report it,” said Christian.

He was handcuffed and taken to the 19th Precinct stationhouse, he said.

According to his lawsuit, he was detained in a holding cell for about two hours. http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.1493575.1382502750%21/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_635/belt23n-8-web.jpg

He or she is supposed to take a single picture of a kid wearing a hoodie as evidence that all kids in NYC wear hoodies?

I'm sure you will see plenty of kids wearing hoodies. Black kids even wear that shit when it's hot out. Must long for their ancestral homelands. :undecided: Anyway, that' a far cry from all kids in NYC wear hoodies. Some kids do. Yeah, I'd imagine that's true.

The profiling I understand.

But I don't understand how a college kid who lives with his mother who has a work study job can afford anything at Barney's.

Sorry that my level of outrage doesn't meet your approval.

It's the work part of the study.

No, Cigar, this was wrong and should not have happened. It does happen to white people too I am afraid although the police don't over react and arrest them. I worked for a company in Maryland once and the owner's wife went into Lord And Taylor's department store in the DC area and was looking at something. The clerk told her she should shop somewhere else because she couldn't afford that item. So, people make value judgments all the time. Admittedly, it doesn't normally result in an arrest and this kid should collect enough to pay for all of his education right up to his PHD.

Well, I will have say Barney's is a bit pricey. $350.00 for a pair of jeans is a little out of my price range. I didn't see any on line but I would suspect a belt would run close to that at least

Four plainclothes cops accused a black woman of credit card fraud after the Brooklyn mom bought a $2,500 designer bag from Barneys — stoking a fresh round of outrage against the high-end store.

Kayla Phillips, 21, a nursing student from Canarsie, told the Daily News she had long coveted the orange suede Céline bag. Armed with a cash infusion from a tax return, she took her Bank of America debit card and headed to the Madison Ave. flagship store on Feb. 28.

Phillips made the purchase without incident but says she was surrounded by cops just three blocks away, at the Lexington Ave. and 59th St. subway station.

“There were three men and a woman,” she recalled. “Two of them attacked me and pushed me against a wall, and the other two appeared in front of me, blocking the turnstile.”
