At the United Nations, Saudi Arabia circulated a draft resolution backing an Arab peace plan for Syria among members of the UN General Assembly on Friday after a similar text was vetoed in the Security Council last week by Russia and China, diplomats said.
Like the failed council resolution, the assembly draft "fully supports" the Arab League plan floated last month, which among other things calls for President Assad to step aside.

There are no vetoes in the General Assembly. The 193-nation body's resolutions have no legal force, unlike those of the Security Council, but were the Syria text to pass it would add to pressure on Assad and his government.....snip~

Plus the Saudis just got done backing the Arab Leagues request to send in UN PeacesKeepers into Syria. After all were being told of no outside Military Intervention. The Plan is to send in Troops from the Arab League with UN Peacekeepers. Natural the Sunni want to get in there and do some fighting against Assad. As they see the Russians were able to hold things up. Now as the Saud has spoken. The rest of the Sunni will follow blindly and without question. Shiznit is about to hit the fan. :poopfan:

I didn't realize the the UN was sending peacekeeping troops in. I'm not sure how that got around Russia and China. I think Assad will shell those troops just like he has his own civilians. It definitely has all the makings of an escalation.

The UN Security Counsel would have to vote on that. Which they havent. But the Arab league did just get done submitting the request.

Russia resonded in While in Colombia.....

Ryabkov, speaking on a visit to Colombia, said Russia would take "drastic measures" if the West kept trying to intervene in Syria's internal affairs through the Security Council.

"The UN council is not a tool for intervention in internal affairs and is not the agency to decide which government is to be next in one country or another," Ryabkov said. "If our foreign partners don't understand that, we will have to use drastic measures to return them to real grounds."

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is almost certain to win a presidential election in March, warned the West not to meddle in the affairs of Syria, or those of Russia.

Russia's lower house of parliament adopted a statement on Friday condemning the West for "intervening in other states' affairs and imposing outside decisions on them".
Some lawmakers in the assembly, which is controlled by Putin's ruling party, called for firmer resistance to the West.

"There is criticism in the Duma that Russia's position on Syria is not strong enough. They say Russia should press its point harder," Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs, told Reuters.....snip~
