BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Ana Jimenez and her husband were so terrified of being sent back to their native Mexico when Alabama's tough crackdown on illegal immigrants took effect that they fled more than 2,000 miles to Los Angeles, cramming into a two-bedroom apartment with more than 20 other relatives.

Now they are among the families coming back to cities like Birmingham, as the mass deportations never materialized and courts blocked parts of the law. No one knows how many people initially left the state, so it's impossible to say how many have returned. But some illegal immigrants are trickling back, unable to find work elsewhere and missing the place that had been home for years.
Of 18 Hispanic immigrants interviewed by The Associated Press in the Birmingham area, six said they had friends or relatives who had returned to Alabama after fleeing because of the law.

The Obama administration, immigrant groups and others sued over Alabama's law, and the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is set to consider arguments about it on March 1. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments a month later over Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigration, which isn't considered as strict as Alabama's.

Republicans who supported the crackdown had said they hoped the tough provisions — which made it difficult if not impossible to legally find work and housing, among other things — would force people to "self-deport" and move out of the state.

State agriculture officials who say the new law led to a chronic shortage in agricultural labor said they haven't seen evidence of large numbers of immigrants returning to the state. Many immigrants worked in the state's poultry processing plants or out in tomato fields, planting and harvesting crops.....snip~

As per the article, they were right.

but then the liberal courts took over and cut the heart out of the law. So much for rules and regulations, plus the fact that liberals hate immigration laws and want open borders, the bad part of open borders is the border will be open just one way .. from mexico into the United States,, do not try to go to mexico illegally ... bad mojo bro

The piece was worded wrong. That should read Illegal Immigrants. As thats who they are referencing. They left due to being Illegal. Now they are returning in small numbers. Because why?

Much of our political class and our economic elite is complicit in this. Liberals certainly do believe that anyone and everyone (aside from criminals) should be able to migrate to the US but they are not alone in that. The odd thing about your average liberal is that it's not in his interest.

look that is the way it alwyas is , everytime you read a piece on immigration they invaribly leave out the part that says these people are illegal , I think they do it on purpose so as to mislead their readers. remember the average person out there reads at the 6th to 8th grade level so most people won't pick up on that little ommision.

Multiculturalism is a recognized failure in Europe. Europeans are beginning to abandon the concept.

Medved has a good piece up on his site about this. There is one culture here. American, the left needs to quit deluding themselves.

Unfortunately, there are many cultures here now. All I'm saying is that it's not something to strive for.
