Since when do Americans tolerate hatred of another and not just tolerate it but excuse it? What a twisted world, ideology has made some the apologists of the right.

Repost: I've only watched a bit of Duck Dynasty but I am fascinated by so called reality TV. This show reminded me of when we were kids in what some call the 'olden times.' No electronics or social media for us. We played outside and when bored we did stupid things, we'd climb just about anything, we'd fire BB guns at whatever, we tried to smoke cigars or get a wino to buy us booze, we'd play with knives, etc etc etc. So for me watching adults act like bored kids was kinda like home. Maybe that is its appeal. But then came another element of the past, intolerance of those on the other side of the tracks, followed by yet another modern American phenom, everything is now partisan.

Calling intolerance intolerance is the only honest reaction to intolerance. Robertson's intolerance is wrong, and his racist nonsense just plain stupid for a man who is around my age. Pretending intolerance is only an act of partisans excuses evil, and while Robertson is not evil, the sort of characterizations he engages in are the foundations of evil. Check history sometime.

Since man stood erect he has had the capacity for both hate and love, empathy and intolerance. What Phil said was uneducated, but hateful? No. Hate is an over-used word. It is that emotion that requires the death of another, not simply a dislike or indifference.

I find it is more useful to use precise vocabulary as often as possible. Words are for the purpose of communicating and what you're communicating is that something you find an unlikable quality can be labeled "hate" to serve the purpose of inflaming the hearts and minds of others against that which you find distasteful.

I don't believe that gays are going to a "Hell", so I disagree with Phil. Instead of stoning him, I choose to understand him and have compassion for him.

Many times when I have disagreements with someone that I can feel I don't like, I try to understand them and then speak from a point of compassion. I am never let down when I do this.

Perhaps, you ought to breed the compassion you want to see in Phil by using some with him?
