On the first day of legal weed sales, retailers were selling top-shelf marijuana to recreational users at prices close to $400 per ounce, not including taxes.

Price of legal marijuana soars in Colorado

The high times in Colorado are coming with high costs for cannabis consumers.

Hemp hunters who waited for hours early Wednesday to be among the first to legally purchase marijuana from state retailers found sticker shock at cash registers.

“I think people were a little bit surprised at the price,” said Rachel Gillette, executive director of the Colorado chapter of NORML, a national nonprofit seeking to make marijuana use legal nationwide.

“We are concerned about that.”

A long line of buyers trails from a store selling marijuana in Pueblo West, Colo., on Wednesday.

They will give the kids in schools free samples and get them hooked, and then they won't care how high the price is.

The price is kind of high though. That's going to make people continue to buy illegally, where it's cheaper, if the legal market can't compete.

This will end badly for Colorado. It will be fun for the rest of us to watch, however.

The problem I have here isn't with the concept that this should be legal. It should. The problem though is that notwithstanding Colorado's law, the Federal prohibition remains intact. None of this is actually legal and to a certain extent Colorado/Denver could be leading these people down the garden path if the Feds decide Federal laws have to be enforced in some kind of uniform fashion throughout the US. Right now, in point of fact, the US is permitting Colorado to nullify a Federal law.

Pot-smoking travelers at one Colorado airport who need to ditch their stash before boarding can deposit their marijuana in an "amnesty box."

The boxes began cropping up at Colorado Springs Airport on Wednesday to give passengers unaware it is illegal to carry pot on a plane the opportunity to dump their weed, The Gazette newspaper reported (http://gazette.com/marijuana-amnesty-boxes-going-up-at-colorado-springs-airport/article/1512674).

While Colorado legalized recreational marijuana use on Jan. 1, major airports in the state have banned it on their facilities to comply with federal agencies, which still consider it illegal.

Different strains of pot are displayed for sale at Medicine Man marijuana dispensary in Denver on Dec. 27, 2013.

Can Colorado residents grow it themselves if they choose to? That would certainly cause a drop in prices.

How much has the state of Colorado made off weed ?

Colorado Hauls in $2M in One Month of Pot Taxes

Colorado inhaled about $2 million in recreational marijuana taxes in January, the first full-month of revenue reported from the fledgling recreational pot industry, the state’s Department of Revenue announced on Monday.

The tax total reported by the state Department of Revenue showed $14.02 million worth of recreational pot was sold with the state collecting roughly $2.01 million.

The taxes come from 12.9 percent sales taxes and 15 percent excise taxes on recreational marijuana.

“The first month of sales for recreational marijuana fell in line with expectations,” Barbara Brohl, executive director of the department, said in a news release.

“We expect clear revenue patterns will emerge by April and plan to incorporate this data into future forecasts.”

Denver county alone accounted for about $1 million in recreational pot taxes for January, the Department of Revenue said.

Medical marijuana added another $1.5 million to state coffers.

Here is a breakdown on the weed money collected by Colorado in January:

Detox Network Sees Pot DUIs Spike in Colorado After Legalization

It may be legal to buy and smoke marijuana in Colorado, but it’s still against the law to drive while high — and that’s a message an increasing number of people aren’t receiving.

Colorado’s largest detox network said Wednesday that the number of its patients busted for DUI while high on pot has nearly doubled, from 8 percent last year to 15 percent this year.

In Co. there are two categories, DWI and DUI. Driving while under the Influence is the one applied for Marijuana. Driving while Intoxicated is for drinking. Both carry some pretty steep penalties.
