But the leopard stood its ground, crouching on a wall, hissing and attacking those who came near.

It injured six villagers, a policeman and four forest guards before being hit with a tranquilizer gun Tuesday. The people are recovering from their injuries, mostly swipes from the cat's claws.

Forest official Dharma Dev Rai says villagers used knives, stones and batons to beat back the cat.

I guess they had to.

Maybe a pack of dogs could have absorbed the attacks or made the cat think twice.

I figured out the problem:

Forest official Dharma Dev Rai says villagers used knives, stones and batons to beat back the cat.

My cat moves just like that at home. The physique of a house cat is almost the same it's just on a much smaller scale. I sometimes wonder what he would be like if he weighed in at 400 pounds... :o

Yeah, cats in general and jungle cats in particular are really amazing animals. I hope eventually India gets to a point where they can protect some of their natural resources and environment...it will be a shame if in a few generations these guys no longer roam the earth (not talking about zoos, none of which are fit to house an animal such as this).

I think the article mentioned that leopards are protected but so much of India is rural and people occasionaly get killed by big cats. In this case, it looks like the tried not to kill it. When an animal starts attacking people though you have to say lights out... :(

Oh yeah, all of that is true. Still India and environmental protections are still at odds...I remain a skeptic 8)

edit: and it's understandable...when food and drinking water is hard to come by, protecting jungle cats is not a priority!

but then you have to look at the religion of india, they claim that to kill an animal is a sin because of their belief in reincarnation, you could be killing your father , brother, sister , aunt, uncle etc... weirdest sect I ever heard of people are starving and cattle roam the streets
