I can't believe we don't have a beer thread. :cheers:What are ya drinkin', what do ya like?

Here's a couple of IPAs, had the Sam Adams Juniper the other day from a variety pack. I don't think it's available as a stand alone. This was a very light IPA, and quite good. The Juniper berries added an unusual pine flavor. Alcohol content, 5.8%

http://www.samueladams.com/craft-beers/juniper-ipa (http://www.samueladams.com/craft-beers/juniper-ipa)Currently drinking a Commodore Perry IPA from Great Lakes Brewing Co. out of Cleveland. This is extremely hoppy, and not for the faint of heart. Pretty tasty as far as extremely hopped IPAs go. I like it, but it's not something I could drink all night. A little on the "high test" side at 7.5% abv. The beer is named after the war of 1812 hero Commodore Perry. https://www.greatlakesbrewing.com/uploads/Beer/WEB%20Profile%20Comm%20Perry%202012.pdf

I've given up on "craft" beer, beer snobs are ruining the industry. All over-hopped piss. Nobody understands style anymore, just hop the shit out of it and kids will throw money at it.

I won't drink Great Lakes for that reason.

Having said that I'm not impartial to hoppy beer. When I want an IPA I'll have one, but when I want a pale ale, most of the time I wind up with hoppy piss.

One of the better beers I've had is Gearys Hampshire Ale, out of Portland ME. Outstanding malty body, well hopped, all around balanced beer. I highly recommend it.

Typically I drink Yeungling. Good every day beer, switched to the lite a few months ago. It really ain't bad.

Joint up the road has Newcastle on tap, another good beer.

Don't get me started on green or clear bottles either.

I make my own beer too.

I AM the authority!

I know how you feel about so called, "beer snobs". But I think that's only a reflection of your own personal taste. Many of us actually like very hoppy selections. And for those that don't, choices abound.

Yeungling Light lager is one of the few light beers I can stand. I pick up a 12 pack now and again when I'm feeling "healthy". :D That is now that you don't have to travel to PA to get it. I actually know guys that loved Yeungling so much, they would make the trip.

Heineken is good stuff. And because it is ubiquitous, you can find it almost anywhere. If they don't have Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, I ask for a Sam Adams Boston Lager, if they don't have that, I ask for a Heineken. Hey, third place counts for a lot.

Yep, the Yeungling Porter is very respectable. I'm not a fruit beer fan, but my wife likes the occasional fruity beer. I'll look for the Magic Hat. I've had some of their other selections, and they've all been good. The variety pack I got the Juniper IPA out of had some Cherry Chocolate Bock, unusual, but not bad.

I'm not a big beer drinker, but a cold beer on a hot day is sheer delight. I keep a suitcase of Miller High Life in my garage but only use it for guests and marinade for chili and steaks.

My tastes vary but currently I have on hand Corona, Shiner Bock and what's left of Blue Moon Summer seasonal sampler 12-pack.

The Old Rasputin is top shelf.

Best thing about Arrogant Bastard Ale is reading the hilarious description on the back of the bottle.

I drove up to Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon last month. They're a business partner and we've been getting free beer from them, which is very good, but I get tired of the same beer all the time. I like their Hophenge IPA.

Russian River Brewing (Santa Rosa, Ca) company is also a business partner and I stop at their brewery on my bi-monthly route to drink a Pliny the Elder

Green Flash is a favorite, out of San Diego.

My standard purchase is Sierra Nevada Torpedo extra IPA, which never disappoints

I'm not a beer snob though. I'll drink Coors or PBR. I actually drink an occasional 40 ouncer or two of Old English 800 malt liquor, which horrifies my friends.

Basically, I like any beer that's pure beer and doesn't have fruit or herbs or lemon rind, etc..

Rum is good but whiskey is my go to for hard liquor. Just mix in some Coke. Captain Morgan's tattoo rum goes really well with cherry Pepsi.

It is a myth that Aussies drink Fosters. Most places dont even have it. Especially not on tap.

The two traditional big beer brands are Tooheys and Victoria Bitter.

I am from NSW so like any decent New South Welshmen I drink Tooheys New. I also like Toohey Extra Dry which has higher alchohol content. edit- or it did I thought. Platinum does anyway.

If you drink stout you dont really need food. (: Its a great drink for alcohilics.

My Dad says he used to drink a heap when he was a young borderline alcho before he met my mother. (: I cought him a can of stout a while ago as a joke. He doesnt drink really these days.

What is the deal with the widget? I have never really drunk a stout I dont think.

A widget is a device placed in a container of beer to manage the characteristics of the beer's head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_head). The original widget was patented in Ireland by Guinness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness). The "floating widget" is found in cans of beer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer) as a hollow plastic sphere, 3 cm in diameter (similar in appearance to a small table tennis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_tennis) ball) with a small hole in one side. The "rocket widget" is found in bottles, 7 cm in length with the small hole at the bottom.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget_(beer)#cite_note-1)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget_(beer)

Ahh. I could hear the widget in the can of guinness that I bought for my Dad.

Sounds kinda dangerous really.

Anything dark+salty. Sam Adams seems to be my favorite, in that I drink it at least 10 times more than any other beer, but that could just be for the widespread availability. I only had it once at Cigar & Brewfest, but I would say my most desired beer is a chocolate schwarzbier. Also had a cherry chocolate beer once that was to die for.

And I won't waste my time with anything yellow. Has to be brown or darker. No stout either. That stuff tastes like shit.

I would like to taste the Arrogant Bastard Ale. But it is not imported in Spain/exported to Spain, or even to Europe.

I like Irish Guinness or some German beers like Franziskaner. Also I liked a Bulgarian one, but I don't remember the name.

About Spanish ones, I don't understand how tourists enjoy San Miguel. It is the worst with Cruzcampo. For Spanish beers Estrella Damm, or Estrella Galicia.

Good to know. I've seen several people predicting the end of the world, SHTF and other catastrophes. Now I think I have a line on the perfect survival item; keeps for years, easily transportable, serves as both food and drink, alcoholic, makes a great trade item and the bottles (plus a cutter) can serve multiple uses.

Monks used to do a beer fast for the 40 days of Lent and only drink stout. Beer has complex carbs, protein, folate, selenium, calcium, niacin, vitamin B6, and distilled water free of chlorine and other pollutants. If you boost the sugar for higher alcohol with molasses, then you're going to get some iron as well and more calcium.

Yep, that's a good one. What does that run, about 15 bucks a four pack?

There used to be a local microbrewery that made an excellent Russian Imperial. It was called "Siberian Night". I just googled it, apparently they still brew the stuff. :woohoo: I knew they still brewed some beer for sale locally, but they used to have a couple of bar/restaurant locations. The pints were reasonable and they had free happy hour food.

Old Leghumper is a pretty good Porter. But my fave was always Golding's Retriever Pale Ale, looks like they no longer make it. http://thirstydog.com/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT

I can find it for about 9 bucks for a 4-pack around here. It's definitely worth it, just more of an occasional thing than anything else. Of course I brought much cheaper stuff, Blue Moon, to this last NYE party.

That Siberian Night looks good! Beer Advocate gives it an "outstanding." If I'm ever in the area I'll check it out.

There's some spin (i.e. making something seem more important than it was), but the facts seem accurate.

True, but overplaying the significance of any historical facts is an error in how we interpret history. Still, it was a fun documentary to watch.

Being a little tongue-in-cheek is fine as long as 1) the facts remain true and 2) it holds the interest of people long enough to pique their interest in history. I've grown more and more fond of history as I've grown older. When I went back to college (night and weekend classes) in my 30s for a degree in International Relations, one of the first things I learned from a Professor was "If you want to understand another nation, study their history and their geography".

People who learn the history of Beer are learning the history of the world.
It's a good documentary even if it's importance is played up a bit. http://www.4smileys.com/smileys/drinking-smileys/beer-smiley.gif

The beers of the Emerald Triangle (the Triangle being comprised of Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino counties) are hit or miss. You've got your Eye of the Hawk from Mendocino Brewing Company, which is one of the originals. You've got your Steelhead Extra Pale Ale out of Blue Lake, which is another longbeard of the local craft brewing community. And, you've got a whole slough of other good and terrible beers alike. It's an experimental community.

But, last week when I was up in Humboldt, me and some guys walked to the market and got a few sixers of local beers, among them a certified organic IPA from Eel River Brewery.

Somebody had made the same damned mistake again of buying Blue Moon (which I have confirmed now without a shadow of a doubt that it tastes exactly the same as Windex... in fact it's my solemn belief that the Blue Moon is simply repackaged after it leaves the Windex factory and sold at a higher cost as beer), but they also redeemed themselves by buying a sixer of certified organic Eel River IPA. It all evened out.

The Eel River IPA is not too hoppy. It isn't precocious or conceited. It doesn't attempt to impress you with volume. It doesn't assault your taste buds with braggadocio. Like the Dude, it simply abides.

It tastes fresh. It reeks of the stench of pure freshness. It goes down like snowmelt on an August day. But do not be fooled. It still contains 7.2% of the good stuff. That's entering malt liquor territory. Be forewarned, and enjoy, though circulation is still very limited. So endeth the review.

Sierra Nevada over hops their beers, their pale ale isn't pale enough. Or their stouts, stouts should not be over-hopped, same for pale ales.

Faux beer snobs equate over-hopping with quality, which is why it's almost impossible to get an honest beer true to it's historical style anymore. Kids are throwing tons of money at over-hopped piss.

Old Speckled Hen, the only beer in the world named after a "rat" car. It was named after an old MG sports car that was used to transport workers around town. It was ratty and paint spattered, hence the name speckled hen. Why they named the beer after it is beyond me.

For hard liquor I love good brandy first and foremost:

Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados [a superb apple-based brandy from Normandy; it used to be called 'the tanker's friend' during WWII in the fight through the Bocage after the D-Day landings as tank crews developed a special fondness for it], and what is probably my favourite, Spanish brandies like Lepanto, Grand Duque D'Alba, Carlos I and Soberanno. Portuguese brandies are similar and quite good too, like Maciera.

Very close behind that, I have developed into a HUGE Bourbon fanatic. Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare being two of my more easily available brands.

What is the alcohol content of beer in California?
In: Beer and Brewing (http://www.answers.com/T/Beer_and_Brewing) [Edit categories]

Answer:
The alcohol content of beer in California can't exceed 4% by volume or 3.2% in weight. Anything higher has to be considered a malt liquor, ale, stout etc...... Some beers however have less. Light beers usually have less alcohol in them.

Full Sail IPA (out of Hood River, Oregon) wouldn't normally be my first choice, but they've had a screaming deal on it at the local market for $5.99.

Prices for food, beer and fuel (the Holy Trinity) aren't always consistent nationally, but have generally been on the rise. I know that everything is expensive in the Hawaiian Islands, and the cheapest state for consumer goods is South Dakota. Inflation is a stark reality.

$5.99 for a sixer of micro-brew is a good deal in California.

Full Sail IPA: 6.0%. Clean. Its conceited claim to be 'ridiculously tasty' is not unfounded. Employee owned [as the top of the label says, "Independent"]. Cold and refreshing on a hot day. The best decision I made all day.
