Stepping up to the podium for his first press briefing in over two weeks, Carney surprised reporters with a scruffy post-holiday beard.

“My wife says she likes it,” Carney said. (Carney is married to ABC News’ Claire Shipman.)

I got curious. Just like presidents not too long ago used public transportation to go home and sometimes walked down sidewalks on streets with traffic, there was a time before press secretaries. The first presidential press secretary was Stephen Early and the position was created, not surprisingly, during the reign of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

An interesting side note in the article was that black reporters, who represented black newspapers, of course, were not allowed at press briefings in the White House until some time 1944. President Roosevelt died in April, 1945.
