why I hate these contrived grandstanding events. All presidents use them in a political way to drive polls.

Things get ridiculous and they are again tonight.

Cigar, I actually like the upbeat things discussed. I feel good when I see presidents in these things. I think our presidents are mostly good guys in a real tough business. I think they have to toss out red meat to satisfy certain groups whether the actually feel great about a specific topic or not. In the end it was predictable.

I wouldn't be so anti-SOTU if Presidents used them to detail specific policies instead of just grandstanding. For example, President Obama has promised to get rid of GITMO as a candidate in 2008, then in every SOTU he's ever given as President. At some point, he has to decide to stop talking about doing it and actually do it.

Every week I bring up The GOP Leaderships Inauguration Night Pledge to NOT support anything The President does, this came from both elected and non-elected Republicans Leaders. Guess what, everyone on this forum pretends that didn't happen and totally ignores what happened that night. But they are the first one to cry Socialist, Hitler and King whenever President Obama says he may have to do something, anything without any help from Congress.

Hummm ... why do you thing The Right on this Forum never addresses the FACT that only "hours" after The President of The United States took office, The Republicans Party Leader made a pledge to never compromise on anything this President wants?

Ask yourself ... what exactly is a President suppose to do when the opposition is saying NO to EVERYTHING before he's even has his first night sleep in The Oval Office?

Be a man and accept that there is nothing legal he can do about it. But, this is obama we're talking about. The boy wont take responsibility for anything.
The worthless little turdburger should have never been allowed to run, much less be installed as president. His past affiliations, that we know about, would disqualify him from getting on the White House custodial staff.

I agree with you cigar, I also think obama sucks as president but thats not all his fault, the obstruction hes faced is unprecedented and NO PRESIDENT gop or dem could have been successful with the level of sheer blind obstruction over everything.

The teaparty has set their precedent, when a republican gets elected president, I sincerely hope they dont think he should or will get a pass from the democrats.

The only substantive speech/response last night was from the Tea Party.

Republicrats competed vigorously with ObombedIt for irrelevancy and inanity. Really, I have to award both Obama and Rogers a tie for first place in both categories.

At least it is over and now we can get back to watching the ObombedItCare debacle unfold.

In April 2004, during the First Battle of Fallujah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Battle_of_Fallujah), a reporter from the North County Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_County_Times) described U.S. Marine mortar teams using a mixture of white phosphorus and high explosives to shell a cluster of buildings where Iraqi insurgents had been spotted throughout the week.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus#cite_note-11) In November 2004, during the Second Battle of Fallujah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Battle_of_Fallujah), Washington Post embedded reporters stated that some U.S. artillery guns fired white phosphorus rounds that "create a screen of fire that cannot be extinguished with water." [12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus#cite_note-WP20041110-12) Insurgents reported being attacked with a substance that melted their skin, a reaction consistent with white phosphorus burns.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus#cite_note-WP20041110-12)
On November 9, 2005 the Italian state-run broadcaster Radiotelevisione Italiana S.p.A. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAI) aired a documentary titled "Fallujah, The Hidden Massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallujah,_The_Hidden_Massacre)", alleging that the United States' used white phosphorus as a weapon in Fallujah causing insurgents and civilians to be killed or injured by chemical burns.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] The filmmakers further claimed that the United States used incendiary MK-77 bombs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_77_bomb) in violation of Protocol III of the 1980 Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_on_Certain_Conventional_Weapons). According to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organisation_for_the_Prohibition_of_Chemical_Weapo ns), quoted in the documentary, white phosphorus is permitted for use as an illumination device and as a weapon with regard to heat energy, but not permitted as an offensive weapon with regard to its toxic chemical properties.[13] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus#cite_note-Reynolds-13)[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus#cite_note-14)
On November 15, 2005, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed to the BBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC) that white phosphorus had been used as an incendiary antipersonnel weapon in Fallujah, stating "When you have enemy forces that are in covered positions that your high explosive artillery rounds are not having an impact on and you wish to get them out of those positions, one technique is to fire a white phosphorus round into the position because the combined effects of the fire and smoke - and in some case the terror brought about by the explosion on the ground - will drive them out of the holes so that you can kill them with high explosives."[ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus#cite_note-15)

As President, he has the authority (thanks to Bush) to close it on his own without interference. He hasn't. If he doesn't have a reasonable expectation to close it, he needs to stop promising he'll close it.
