On the march the Legionary could carry between three and fourteen day's worth of rations, a saw, a wicker basket, a piece of rope or leather, a shovel, a waterskin, a sickle and a pickaxe.

http://www.unrv.com/military/legionary-weapons-equipment.php

The pickaxe was called a dolabra. I have one, actually. The iron head anyway.

Yeah, this is a good site you found. It's cool that a group of (presumably) history buffs would put this together.

Rome's decline is facinating as well, while the focus is often on the Barbarian invasions / rise of islam etc.. the reality seem to be that the Roman economy was already well in the gutters before the barbarian invasion, and hell it seem to have been a pretty obvious one way trip for them from the start....

awesome info!

At several points in Roman history, their gold was so debased that even the barbarians refused to take it!

Do you mean Bi-sexual RW? Yes the Greeks were considered as so. Although I doubt they used such terminology like we do at the time. Same can be said of the Romans. There were the Sacred Banders as well.

Rome on HBO was a great series, I highly recommend it. Not sure how historically accurate it was but it was darn entertaining.

It was very good. I don't have HBO here, but I was able to buy the DVDs in Iraq, for a surprisingly small payment .

It is generally accurate on the big things, and then of course the character's actions outside of historic context were fiction.

It was the most expensive TV series to that date.

I highly recommend it. But if you are prudish be warned. There is lots of sex (even gay sex.)

That and I watched the one on Sparticus. Both were good.

:roflmao: I'm not surprised at all.

Yeah, it was a good show. The friendship of the two main guys was great. Never did see Spartacus, the actor passed away didn't he?

Don't know. I didn't by the Iraqi copy of Spartacus.

yeah I saw a small part of that Rome series and it was really really serious on a lot of the daily details of the romans, most of the events are correct though obviously individual charactors ' role are sometimes stretched / exaggerated / made up.

The Rome : Total War game that was out a long time ago is a lot less accurate ;) but never the less it was a cool game.

I know, though IMHO that series is half dead without the moddabiltiy of the RTW / M2TW versions. player made mods are so much better than the original content in so many ways it's ridiculas .. Rome II is supposedly a new engine (the 3 previous series ETW / NTW / S2TW are largely the same engine) but it seems unlikely that it'll be that much more mod friendly.

Total War makers also released a total patch called Total War Total Realism.

I liked both of them.....plus I have all the Age of Empires and up to Civilization3. Although in AOE I never chose the Romans to Conquer with.
I wouldn't mind visiting Rome. As a Sicani it would be interesting to see what our offspring did.

There are still very active mod communities for new games that come out though. The RPG Skyrim has a bunch of mods for example. So don't give up too much hope, it could happen.

Ahhh yes but my main preoccpuation is history ;) the ETW/NTW/S2TW engines could be modded to some extend but that extend is nowhere near what you could do in M2TW/ RTW. (for one thing, you can't change the map anymore, which is a huge blow, I changed my M2TW map to soemthing like this.)

(setting 1100 starting date)

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/RollingWave/factions-5.jpg

compare that with the old standard M2TW starting map (can see it on the btm left corner

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff59/RollingWave/Greecelol.jpg

also for the same map area, this is what eventually hope to make the map in appearance. (though this part is gonna take awhile, given how many you need to set in)

RollingWave

it's a mod to M2TW, called the last kingdom , mostly centered around late dark age northern Europe, it is quite awesome, but in terms of pure modding skill this one tops them all by a mile... it's utterly mind blowing

3rd Age : Total War to be frank I have my doubts that Rome 2 will be prettier than this...

I have M2TW on CD. Can I get the download version of 3rd age? In the past the download add ons didn't work unless you had a downloaded version of the original.

this is the page that has the link, I think you probably need the Kingdom expansion to play it though. but otherwise mods nowadays are pretty well done, just install the game, download the mod and run the EXE and it's installed with desktop icon and all.

Central Rome may be one of the most popular areas of Rome with the ancient center of Rome surrounded by the Aurelian Wall dating back to around 270 AD. This area is the smallest administrative zone and does include small wards. Around this area, you will find larger urban districts. The center of Rome is the Piazza Venezia where you will find a large white marble monument built in honor and bearing the name of King Victor Emmanuel II responsible for uniting Italy. Along with the magnificent statue is the Palazzo Venezia the palace where Benito Mussolini addressed his followers. All over central Rome, you will find fascinating pieces of history such as the gate found at Piazza del Popolo created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini leading to the Via Flaminia. Nearby is the Santa Maria del Popolo home to the paintings of Caravaggio depicting the conversions of Saint Paul and Saint Peter. Also in central Rome, you will find the Piazza Colonna with the statue of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, among residences of political leaders of Italy.
