WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon is planning to restart programs that would fund military training and equipment in Yemen, nearly a year after they were shut down because of escalating chaos in the embattled country.

The plan is in line with the Obama administration's intention to provide significant security and civilian aid to Yemen in 2012-13 as long as the Middle Eastern country continues to move toward a new government and funding is kept out of the hands of insurgents.

Yearlong protests across Yemen, coupled with pressure from the U.S., led to the ouster of longtime Yemeni ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh. U.S. leaders have said they believe that newly inaugurated Yemeni president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, will be a good partner to the U.S.

The U.S. has poured more than $326 million in security and civilian assistance into Yemen since 2007, fueled by the escalating terrorist threat from al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which is based there. The funding flow, however, was abruptly turned off last year as political and security unrest raged.

Pentagon leaders have as much as $350 million to spend on military aid to foreign countries this year, and according to congressional restrictions up to $75 million can be spent on Yemen. Congress also requires the Pentagon and State Department to defend the spending, including assurance that any assistance will be properly used.

Since 2007, Yemen has received about $316 million in U.S. civilian aid, including humanitarian, education, development and refugee assistance.....snip~

 We just do not learn from past mistakes. We put a puppet on a string in Control. That puppet then starts a civil War between Sunni and Shia Muslims. Then takes it to his own Sunni population who rise up in protests to Selah and his corrupt government. He then opens fires on his own people. Then attacks others who oppose him. Then is given 100% Immunity from the US to not be prosecuted.

We pour millions of dollars into Yemen with Civilian and Humanitarian Aid. Plus now we want to pour more Military Aid into Yemen. Truly this Country's Leaders have gone Nuts.
Perhaps we should take the Loving Parent Approach and not Allow the Children to play with weapons and or dangerous toys. :undecided:

You took the words right out of my mouth. We're following the same practice in Yemen that we did in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It's not working! How much money have we pissed away in these three countries while our borders remain porous? Ridiculous.

Naw, lets borrow money and give dangerous toys to dangerous children.

I think the U.S. government is run by a pack of lunatics.

The problem, IMO, is that we do not have a coherent foreign policy and haven't had one since 1989 or so. I know some of you think that this democracy fetish is a merely the [pretext for a predatory agenda. I disagree. In reality, it's what passes for a foreign policy these days.

No, the problem is that we don't have the MYOB foreign policy that the Founders started us out with. Frankly, I could care less if the rag heads want to have their own religious nut states where they oppress women and practice old testatment justice. Societies like that never get much beyond stone age. The only reason a couple of them have is because they have oil. When that is gone, they are back to humping camels and sleeping in tents. The right policy here is energy and resource independence and strategic usage of two very large oceans to keep these throwbacks out of the U.S.

US Troops on the Ground in Yemen, Navy Ships Positioned Nearby: DoD
May 06, 2016 | A small team of U.S. troops has deployed on the ground in Yemen to help Emirati forces in a fight for a port city against an al-Qaeda offshoot, the Pentagon said Friday.

The service members were sent to the region about two weeks ago. The amphibious assault ship USS Boxer and its amphibious ready group of vessels with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit are positioned offshore to back up the team on the ground and support the forces of the United Arab Emirates in assisting Yemeni government forces against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Staff Sgt Jeffrey S. Ray, a drill Instructor at MCRD Parris Island S.C., speaks to a delegation of officers from Yemen

The Yemeni and UAE operations recently ousted the terrorist group from the port of Mukalla. Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, declined to say how many U.S. troops were on the ground in Yemen but said "we view this as a short-term operation" and they were expected to be withdrawn soon.

Davis also confirmed that the U.S. has been conducting airstrikes against the terrorist group apart from the effort to assist the Emiratis. He said four airstrikes have been carried out since April 23, killing an estimated 10 terrorists.

Haven't we learned by now that Arabs don't posses western military discipline? In general. A small number of SoF forces have been worthwhile.

The Saudis have had decades of extensive US military training. At some point you have to ask yourself if they are capable of learning military skills to our standards.

The Arabs were never really good at fighting and killing an enemy on the battlefield. Nor fighting period. Nor are they good at Boxing, Martial arts. Dueling. Kendo and truly they aren't even good at the art of the naked kill.

At some point we need to ask ourselves.....why do we listen to anything they have to say.

The Arabs can't even defeat themselves. Haven't been able to do it for 5000 years or more. What does that tell ya?

Could it be that they and all other Arab countries have learned them to your standards, which is why the world is in such a mess.

LoL.

Non-responsive. I am speaking strictly about military tactical and technical competence.

Go find another thread to discuss policy.

No it couldn't.....as clearly in Iraq the Arabs showed they don't have the heart or courage to follow thru with their training. Its why they ran off abandoning weapons and their gear. Just didn't have what it takes to stand up for their own country.

Of course the Saud and other Sunni Arabs hiring mercs to fight for them all the time. Puts them in the perspective they are.

How deep does our inability to learn from our own mistakes run? Where is the disconnect that allows things which have been tried and failed repeatedly to continue being tried in lieu of other new actions or even new NON-/actions.? Even those of you who believe we need to continue to act, surely must believe we should try other action once in a while?
