A military court in Egypt has acquitted an army doctor accused of carrying out forced "virginity tests" on women protesters, state media reports.

Ahmed Adel was cleared because the judge found contradictions in witness statements, the state news agency said.

The case was brought by one of the women, Samira Ibrahim, who said the "tests" took place after they had been detained during protests last year.

Demonstrators gathered outside the court to protest against the ruling.

The practice drew an outcry after Ms Ibrahim and other women spoke out about their treatment following their arrest during a protest in Tahrir Square in March 2011 - weeks after the fall of President Hosni Mubarak.

They said they had been forced by the Egyptian army, while in detention, to submit to a five-minute-long so-called virginity test by a male doctor.

Here's another example of a government our policy makers should be proud to have helped come to power. What can you do but shake your head and believe this is more evidence we should abandon the region to its own depravity.

Egyptian lawmaker who proposed ‘female genital mutilation’ to ‘reduce sexual desires’ now wants women to undergo ‘virginity tests’ to get into college
Monday 3rd October, 2016 - Virginity test should be imposed on women before taking admission into a college in Egypt, according to Parliamentary lawmaker Elhamy Agina.

The Ministry of Higher Education was urged by the lawmaker to issue a notice that would make a virginity test mandatory for women entering university. He added that only women who pass the virginity test should be granted admission into the specific university. Agina, in an interview, stated, “Any girl who enters university, we have to check her medical examination to prove that she is a Miss. Therefore, each girl must present an official document upon being admitted to university stating she’s a Miss.” The title “miss” is emphasised upon because in Egypt, “miss” stands for a woman who has retained her virginity.

He affixed, “No one should be upset by this decision. If you’re upset then that means you’re scared that your daughter is in an ‘urfi’ marriage behind your back.” ‘Urfi’ marriage refers to an orthodox practice in which no legal notion is required and the marriage is performed by a cleric in the presence of only two witnesses. This defies the cultural practice requiring families of both sides. Urfi is popular amongst the youth in Egypt who try to ward off expenses of tradition and often want a secret union. Pre-marital sex is looked down upon and is forbidden in Egypt. Urfi is seen as a way of warding off this law and has been heavily criticised by the conservatives.

Agina has received his fair share of criticism following his controversial statement. “How about we have mandatory IQ tests for politicians who aim to mandate nonsense like this,” tweeted Journalist Jacky Habib. Agina is no stranger to controversy. Only last month he suggested every woman to undergo genital mutilation to “reduce their sexual desires” because men in Egypt are “sexually weak.” Agina had argued, stronger men will be required for Egypt to consider ban of female genital mutilation but since the country does not have any, it's just legitimate for women to get genitally mutilated.

This is why the West must be careful with allowing Muslims in.
